Legislative Assistant

Job Description:
The Legislative Assistant is responsible for tracking legislative and budget proposals; preparing relevant documents; and writing and maintaining organized files for letters, alerts, meeting materials, emails and reports concerning legislation and the state budget; as well as general administrative duties.

Job Duties:

  • Codes and tracks legislation. This includes creating and maintaining internal tracking documents for the Government Relations team
  • Monitors legislative hearings and floor sessions for sponsored legislation and other bills of interest and for announcements relating to important dates
  • Prepares necessary legislative briefing documents and/or factsheets along with documents for the Government Relations Director before meetings
  • Drafts and submits legislative letters and floor alerts upon request and tracks budget priorities and related hearings
  • Prepares documents and reports related to Government Relations team’s work for Executive Board, Locals, and for external purposes
  • Updates Government Relations staff on legislative calendar and timelines
  • Schedules appointments, meetings, and reservations for the Government Relations Director, lobby days, and lobbyists, as needed
  • Assists with financial reports and lobbying paperwork as requested

The position of Legislative Assistant must possess an ability to develop knowledge of SEIU issues, knowledge of the legislative process and maintain political awareness. The Legislative Assistant is distinguished by the following characteristics:

  • The position of Legislative Assistant must possess an ability to develop knowledge of SEIU California and our member Locals
  • Refined communication and interpersonal skills; must be able to interact with coworkers, supervisors, SEIU members, Local staff and leaders, public, etc. sufficiently to exchange or convey information and receive work direction
  • Understands the functions and operations of legislative/budget process and its relationship to SEIU priorities
  • Highly organized and able to multi-task
  • Ability to balance workload requirements that have both immediate and long-term deadlines
  • Professional writing skills, including knowledge of legislative standards
  • Develops and maintains knowledge of SEIU issues including those affecting members and Locals

Skills Required

  • 2-3 years of legislative administration experience
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and CapitolTrack
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Comfortable with routinely shifting demands
  • High degree of attention to detail

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree preferred and two years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficing to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Terms:

  • This position reports to the Government Relations Director
  • Work is performed full time in-person in office in downtown Sacramento and may require long and extended hours
  • Travel may also be required
  • Probation: One year
  • This is a full-time, non-exempt, hourly position

Salary & Benefits:

  • Starting Hourly Rate: $31.99 or higher DOE with a minimum 35 hour per week schedule, with frequent 40 hour weeks and overtime
