The California Nurses Association (CNA)/National Nurses Organizing Committee (NNOC)/National Nurses United (NNU) is leading the national movement for registered nurse power to transform the market-driven health care industry into a health care system based on patient need.

Maintain your current home base with the understanding that this position will be mostly in the field, requiring extensive cross-country travel. Organizing requires frequent evening and weekend work.

Position Overview:
Across the country, we’re looking for experienced Organizers and lead organizers, who want to return to the progressive values that started them working in the labor movement as well as activists who want to learn to become union organizers.

We are seeking both experienced organizers and organizers new to union organizing for exciting union organizing drives to develop strong nurse leaders and build an effective organization with the power to fight and win improvements both inside the hospitals and for the working class at large.

Mobilize for member-based power with a union that rejects corporate partnerships that sell out workers and is committed to social change.
Do the work that you love with a supportive team of highly competent staff who treat each other with respect and pitch in to build a movement for healthcare justice and to change the world.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities

• Identify, recruit, train, develop and inspire RN leaders through one-on-one and group communication
• Organize shop floor fights
• Build and maintain RN organization in the workplace
• Organize and lead productive meetings
• Develop and implement successful tactics to win union organizing elections against employer opposition
• Organize community coalition and other political actions to advance our movement
• Help to organize and run large actions such as picket lines, strikes, and marches
• Perform administrative tasks necessary for organizing (such as maintaining databases, producing materials, and correspondence)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Required Qualifications Include:

• Experience as an organizer in union or social justice movement setting preferred
• Willing to work long, irregular hours (including nights and weekends), as needed
• Extensive travel as needed
• Relocation may be required
• Commitment to social change and to carrying out the vision and program of the organization
• Ability to work with minimal supervision
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work in a team setting
• Commitment to organizational discipline and implementation of directives set by the organization and its leadership
• Ability to work with a diverse, multi-cultural membership
• Ability to speak other languages is a plus
• Valid driver’s license and insured car

Preferred Skills/Knowledge/Experience that is helpful but not required:

• Leading or working on union elections in both public and private sector
• Led strikes or pickets
• Organized shop floor fights
• Recruited, identified and trained member leaders to recruit other leaders
• Built community coalitions
• Utilized proficiently an electronic database to track information and generate reports

Organizing staff are based out of the Organizing Department with national travel. This position works mostly in the field. This position involves cross-country travel, as well as regional travel. There is frequent evening and weekend work.

COMPENSATION
Anticipated Annual Salary: $70,267 – $129,511/yr., as set forth in the staff union collective bargaining agreement.

Compensation is determined in accordance with the wage scales, classifications, and applicable differentials established under the staff union collective bargaining agreement. NNU is committed to compensation equity and consistent application of the agreement’s provisions.
