Position Description
CTUL is seeking an experienced Deputy Director to oversee the organization’s organizational development, governance, personnel management and strategic planning. The Deputy Director will be a leader and a change agent in driving best practices in support of the organization’s mission. This role will be an advocate for staff experience, organizational agility and creating a learning culture. The Deputy Director will have deep experience with operational best practices and up-to-date online tools.

This position reports to the Executive Director.

What you’ll do
Strategy, Vision and Leadership:

  • Contribute to the development of CTUL’s strategic goals and objectives as part of the leadership team, and help guide the overall management of the organization.
  • In support of the CTUL’s mission, promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning, feedback and a commitment to quality throughout the organization.
  • Provide analytical support to CTUL management and staff including development of internal reporting capabilities.
  • Maintain a continuous line of communication with the Executive Director to support strategic decision-making on all critical issues.
  • Report to the board of directors on organizational performance metrics as needed by the Executive Director.

Team Development and Personnel Management

  • Supervise Directors and be accountable for directors functions
  • Supervise the HR Lead and be accountable for human resources functions including: training; staff development; compensation and benefits; employee relations; and performance evaluation, with a strong focus on diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Oversee staff recruitment and hiring.
  • Managing leads and staff meeting planning and facilitation
  • Support the ED in the planning and facilitation of director meetings 
  • Oversee/Provide guidance on informal coaching conversations, corrective action, and progressive discipline
  • Support conflict resolution and workplace investigations as needed
  • Oversee best practices for terminations and approve terminations 
  • Create, update and execute organizational policies across the organization; and ensure that all systems that support CTUL staff are efficient, easily accessible and transparent.
  • In support of the CTUL’s mission, promote a culture of growth and continuous improvement that prioritizes learning, feedback and a commitment to innovation throughout the organization.
  • Oversee staff training and practice to build an inclusive, supportive organizational culture where everyone on the team feels valued and can thrive.
  • Represent CTUL management with the staff union, and cultivate a collegial, problem-solving relationship with the union based on partnership and trust.

Governance 

  • Support the Executive Director in maintaining robust organizational governance for CTUL’s member-led board of directors; provide staff leadership to Board committees; ensure compliance with nonprofit governance best practices; and support the Board as needed with training and capacity building.
  • Act as a key staff liaison to the Board of Directors, translating strategic vision into operational reality while ensuring all programs and fiscal activities remain in compliance with the highest legal and ethical standards.

Legal

  • Manage legal needs for CTUL, working with outside counsel as required.

Qualifications:

  • 10 years experience in a similar position, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Proven track record of success leading organizational change and development within a growing organization
  • Superior personnel management ability, with strong mentoring and coaching experience on teams with diverse levels of expertise. Experience managing in organizations with unionized staff preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA) and labor law principles
  • Excellent judgment and creative problem solving skills including the ability to lead a range of stakeholders in establishing a shared vision and executing it together
  • Entrepreneurial, flexible team player who can think experimentally and can take a learning approach to our work. 
  • Organized, detail-oriented and experienced in managing complex projects
  • Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with management, boards of directors, and staff
  • Passion for racial justice and for CTUL’s mission
  • Ability to periodically work on weekends and evenings, as needed.
  • Confidentiality, integrity, and a sense of humor.

Salary and Benefits
CTUL has a tiered salary range set by the Staff and Board based on the principles of economic justice and inclusion. This salaried position is currently compensated at $87,550 per year. This full-time position will normally work 80 hours per pay period, including some work on evenings and weekends. Benefits include: 3 weeks paid vacation, sick days, 5 recuperation days, 19 paid holidays, 90% employer-paid medical and dental insurance for you and your immediate family, 100% employer-paid vision and life insurance, a monthly phone stipend, and an annual end of year bonus of 5% of your annual salary which can be used towards a retirement fund.
