The Engineers and Scientists of California Local 20, International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers, AFL-CIO & CLC is a democratic labor union representing nearly 10,000 workers throughout California. The Local is headquartered in Oakland and has an experienced, stable, and united Executive Board. ESC Local 20 members are highly skilled professionals employed principally at Pacific Gas and Electric Company (“PG&E”), Kaiser Permanente, Southern California Edison, private and public health care facilities, local and federal government agencies, and legal non-profits.
ESC Local 20 is seeking a Southern California Director who will work closely with the Executive Director to oversee the membership representation in the Southern California Edison unit.
Main duties include:
- Supervise and direct a team of professional labor representatives who work to represent members and maintain a productive relationship with the employer
- Engage in and oversee representation and collective bargaining, including grievances, impact bargaining, and labor relations engagement
- Establish and maintain working relationships with diverse stakeholders, including union member leaders, union members, employer representatives, labor organizations, and other necessary constituencies
- Fostering a collaborative, problem solving environment
- The Southern California Director works to implement the policies and directives established by the ESC Executive Board and reports directly to the Executive Director
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications include:
- 10 years of directly relevant experience, with at least 5 years providing supervision
- A graduate degree, or equivalent experience
- Experience in grievance administration and contract negotiations
- Professional knowledge of the NLRA, LMRDA, and similar laws related to collective bargaining, labor union governance, and grievance processing
- Superb attention to detail and follow-through
- The ability to positively manage and mentor a team of experienced union representatives
- A history of collaborative work with board members and staff to develop and execute strategic vision and directives
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- The ability to listen actively with respect to all opinions, including dissent, and make tough decisions when necessary
Initial salary range is between $180,000 and $202,000. Outstanding benefits package includes 100% employer-paid family medical and prescription coverage. ESC provides a 401K/Pension employer contribution of 21% of the annual base salary. Pension vests after 5 years. The position has generous time-off benefits that include vacation and compensatory time off. This position is not in the bargaining unit and is an at-will position.
The Southern California Director will work in the field in Southern California Edison service territory as assigned. This includes various counties in Southern California. The job will require travel as part of representation, organizing drives, or other assignments. Monthly staff meetings are in our Oakland, CA office. Work can include long, irregular hours, including evenings and weekends. A valid Driver’s License and insurability are a requirement for this position. Willing to complete a background check.
