About the position:
Jobs to Move America (JMA) seeks a talented and experienced Assistant Director for Campaigns to lead campaigns for its Western States program. Under the supervision of the Western States program director, the Assistant Director for Campaigns will play a critical role in establishing community benefits agreement (CBA) campaigns, as well as in the negotiation and implementation of CBAs with strong racial equity and environmental justice provisions between community groups, unions, and employers in clean technology manufacturing industries. They will exercise direct supervision over, train, assign work to, and review the performance of up to four staff. The assistant director may also design and conduct a variety of organizational initiatives as assigned by the Western States Director.

What You’ll Do ─ Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Assistant Director is supported by a Western States Director who provides supervision and an Organizing Director who supports the supervision of organizers at JMA by providing training, evaluation and professional development support.
  • Manage CBA campaigns, including: directing research needed to identify, develop, and execute new campaigns; worker and community organizing efforts; negotiation of major agreements for the Western States program; and monitoring CBA compliance and reporting.
  • Lead the hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of up to four staff members from diverse backgrounds and disciplines as assigned by the Western States Director, holding them accountable to achieving programmatic goals and providing opportunities for professional development.
  • Build relationships with campaign collaborators, including allied community, environmental, and labor organizations.
  • Supervise organizers and their development of raps, assessment tools, debrief notes, outreach and turnout plans, and other campaign materials.
  • Supervise researchers and their development of corporate profiles, worker and community surveys, campaign strategies and tactics, and other campaign materials, with potential support from the National Director and/or Research Director.
  • Assign the appropriate workload to organizers and researchers to meet goals which are measurable, achievable, and time-bound; make assignments according to evidence-based practices such as evaluating assessment data.
  • Support the Western States Director in program budget development and implementation.
  • Approximately 25 percent of the Assistant Director’s time will be devoted to team supervision (e.g., holding regular check-in meetings, reviewing work plans and progress, reviewing organizing materials);
  • Approximately 50 percent will be devoted to programmatic work (e.g., leading and preparing for campaign meetings, reviewing and contributing to research and communications strategy, reviewing and contributing to developing worker organizing strategy, field work including direct worker and community organizing, and meeting with stakeholders such as union partners.)
  • Up to 25 percent will be devoted to fundraising and administrative tasks (e.g., attending weekly staff meetings, developing policies and procedures with the Western States Director, assisting with Development needs)
  • Travel to current and potential campaign locations across Arizona, focused on the Phoenix Metropolitan Area, to engage in worker organizing and campaign advancement. Some travel to Nevada and California may also be required. (No more than 25 percent of time.)

About you ─ Required Qualifications:

  • At least six years of progressively responsible work experience in a critical role with labor, community, or policy advocacy campaigns.
  • A track record of success in at least one of the following campaign disciplines: organizing, strategic research, or communications.
  • Strong understanding of comprehensive campaigns and how to build worker and community power.
  • Demonstrated commitment to economic, racial, gender, and social justice movements.
  • Highly collaborative, with a strong ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, membership and employer representatives, consultants and coalition partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, train, and manage staff, including evaluations and developing staff. Strong management skills are a requirement.
  • Strong verbal communication skills and experience making presentations for a wide range of audiences, including government agencies, community organizations and labor partners.
  • Proven ability to speak effectively in public forums and deal tactfully with the public.
  • Ability to actively participate in and lead strategy development with staff and external partners
  • Proficient in Google Suite platform and Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint applications), and proactively learns new tools.
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and follow-through skills; ability to follow through with deadlines; ability to manage multiple tasks/projects simultaneously and adapt to changing priorities; attention to detail; and problem-solving skills.
  • Advanced ability to plan, organize and coordinate complex projects.
  • In-depth knowledge of labor unions.
  • A valid driver’s license, automobile, and frequent travel is required for this position.

Extra consideration will be given to candidates who:

  • Have a deep understanding and experience with political and organizing landscape in Arizona or Nevada
  • Have experience in developing corporate accountability campaigns with unions, policy organizations or community groups
  • Skilled in the use of computers and associated software and salesforce/VAN/LAN or similar data systems is a plus
  • Have personal ties or desire to live and work in Phoenix, AZ and have adequate transportation to do so.
  • Fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred

Other Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.
  • Regular travel across Arizona, Nevada, and potentially other western states, will be required. Occasional weekend and evening work is required. Must have access to reliable transportation.

What Else You Should Know ─ Compensation/Benefits:

  • Salary Range $87,500 – $102,500 (The salary range for this position is dependent on experience)

  • Generous paid time off including 12 personal days, 12 federal holidays, and 2 floating holidays each year. JMA has a paid, two-week winter break at the end of each year. Employees can accrue up to 20 vacation days and 20 sick days. After 5 years of work, all staff are eligible to apply for 3 months of sabbatical leave.
