Communications Coordinator

The Committee of Interns and Residents (CIR) is the largest housestaff union in the United States. We are a local of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), representing over 17,000 resident physicians who are dedicated to improving residency training and education, advancing patient care, and expanding healthcare access for our communities. CIR’s mission is to empower our nation’s interns, residents and fellows to fight for excellence for our patients.

Job Summary:
The Communications Coordinator will support the Communications Director to be responsible for building our online presence and communicating directly with our members, and the public using multiple online platforms. This position will create and design social media and communications campaigns addressing resident physician issues. This role will work collaboratively with Public Affairs, Field, and Political staff to expand our reach and build support for our campaigns.

Job Responsibilities:
Communications Planning & Strategy

  • Work with the Communications Director to develop messaging frameworks, communication plans and digital strategy for on-the-ground campaigns
  • Work closely with various departments to develop relevant content, including digital outreach and online organizing for union programs
  • Create organizing materials (digital and print) to promote CIR

Messaging and Content Creation

  • Write compelling, engaging copy for emails, blog posts, potential members and alumni to further internal and external organizing, and strategic campaigns
  • Work with Public Affairs department to create shareable graphics, fliers, and other content for to use for social and offline purposes
  • Create content to run across multiple channels such as Facebook, Twitter, etc.
  • Participate on social media to build the organization’s visibility
  • Increase reach, growth, and engagement of online communities to help build support for our campaigns
  • Assist with communications requests from various regions and departments
  • Work on the ground to help document actions and train leaders on best practices for outreach

CIR is looking for candidates who have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a communication-related field a plus
  • Previous online organizing experience with a labor union or other advocacy group, and the belief in and commitment to progressive social justice
  • Exceptional communication skills (verbal and writing)
  • Understand social media analytics and be able to leverage online tools to prioritize engagement over vanity metrics
  • Understand brand-cohesion and good storytelling
  • Must have basic graphic design skills to create (and experience creating) textable graphics, memes, and flyers
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced organization with tight deadlines
  • Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy
  • Familiarity with a range of online campaigning tools, tactics, and strategies
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a remote team and can demonstrate a strong ability to work cross-functionally
  • Basic knowledge of HTML, Adobe Creative Cloud, or similar programs
  • Ability to document actions and turn around compelling video/photo content
