Legislative Representative

The Transportation Trades Department, AFL-CIO (TTD) seeks a lobbyist to represent the views of transportation unions before Congress and the Executive Branch. TTD consists of 33 affiliated unions who together represent workers in all modes and areas of transportation. TTD focuses its advocacy efforts on the federal funding, authorization and other policy proposals that affect the transportation workers represented by our member unions.

The Legislative Representative will be responsible for advancing an agenda in a defined set of issues and at the same time, work as part of our team on organization-wide priorities. The Legislative Representative must be able to review and analyze bills and other policy proposals, and draft letters to Members of Congress and other written advocacy materials. The Legislative Representative will be required to devise and implement successful legislative strategies and work with our unions in a collaborative manner to advance our agenda. The Legislative Representative will also work with our communication team to ensure persuasive and effective public messaging on our issues.

The individual should have 5 years of related experience with preference given to candidates with Capitol Hill, Executive Branch, labor movement and/or non-profit backgrounds. This position requires not only excellent advocacy skills, but also the willingness and ability to understand and explain substantive policy issues impacting transportation workers. Outstanding writing skills are required for this position. As part of the interview process, candidates will be asked to take a short writing test. Candidates must be able to excel in a fast-paced, small office environment and have a genuine interest in working for the labor movement.
