Apprenticeship and Education Coordinator
Based in the Minneapolis-Saint Paul Metropolitan Area, MN
Background:
SEIU local 26 is a dynamic local of over 8000 janitors and security officers in Minnesota, the people who clean and protect some of largest corporate headquarters in the world and who have a proud history of militant fights for social and economic justice.
- Local 26 members were some of the first security officers in the country to go on strike and engaged in acts of strategic civil disobedience to win their last contract, and struck again in 2013 to raise standards within their industry across 2000 suburban and downtown officers.
- In 2009 and 2019 the janitors of the union, a multilingual bargaining unit made up of Latin American, East African, and American-born workers, created an alliance with the Sierra Club and other environmentalist allies went on strike to win a groundbreaking contract that included some of the first Green Cleaning language in the country, and later won a green cleaning education fund.
- Local 26 led campaigns to hold Chipotle accountable for its treatment of immigrant workers, resulting in Chipotle becoming one of the first Major US companies to come out publicly for progressive comprehensive immigration.
Opportunity:
The events of the last year have clarified the essential role that Property Service workers play in three current crises facing our communities: Climate Change, the Pandemic, and the Social Justice/Black Lives Matter Movement. This attention to the work that our members have done for decades has increased the opportunities to develop a series of apprenticeships and educational trainings for union members to advance in their careers, and help lead with our experience as front line workers on solutions to these societal crises. We have an opportunity build training programs in support of several labor objectives: development of sector-based quality standards, increased pay and respect for service workers, creation of high road partnerships for better jobs and expanded union growth and representation, growth and impact of organized labor at local, state, and national levels, etc.
The work of the Apprenticeship and Education Coordinator will include the following:
- Work with partners on implementation of education programs including Community Safety Specialist, windows apprenticeships, Janitorial English Language and green cleaning trainings.
- Organizational development in partnership with Minnesota Training Partnership, and other national and local Property Services workforce development structures.
- Support and facilitation of industry collaboration on training and workforce policy
- Convening program partners including employers, union members, mentors, trainers, and others
- Program development on training that serves SEIU members, new members, and the community through a combination of restricted and non-restricted funds
- Identify public workforce opportunities – including WIOA funding
- Development of administration to manage training funds including negotiated Taft-Hartley funds
- Fundraising from philanthropic and public workforce agencies
- Grow and develop other educational goals within SEIU 26, including member, steward and staff trainings.
- Other duties as required to meet project goals
Preferred skills and experience
- 2 years experience with training, adult education, and/or workforce development programs
- 2 years experience with labor and/or social justice organizations
- Familiarity with popular education and worker-centered training
- Experience with labor/management training funds, WIOA funding structures, program and grant development, not-for-profit structures, and program administration
Pay and Benefits:
This is a position beginning in first quarter 2020. Pay is on a scale commensurate with a union of low-wage members. Healthcare and other benefits are included. A car and valid driver’s license are required.
Location: Minneapolis-Saint Paul Metropolitan Area, Minnesota.
