The North Valley Labor Federation is a partnership of over 70 local union affiliates, two central labor councils, and their collective members and community allies. As the leading edge of the Labor Movement in the North San Joaquin Valley, the NVLF empowers working people to stand together to promote their interests and improve communities. Our inclusive coalition uses strategic campaigns to win victories that benefit all workers and their families.

The Job

The NVLF is hiring a Community Workforce Organizer. This new organizer will engage in a combination of workplace and community organizing to connect with and educate workers (both unionized and non-unionized) in industries that are at high-risk for COVID-19 outbreaks. The organizer will share information about workplace rights and safety (including vaccine access) and empower workers to protect themselves, their co-workers, and their community from COVID-19. This campaign will utilize a variety of outreach methods, both remote (video conference, phone, text, social media) as well as in-person meetings when they can be conducted safely. This position is funded by a grant through July 31, 2021 with the possibility of continued employment beyond this date.

Tasks may include the following:

  • Assist with developing a campaign plan to reach workers in specific industries identified to be high risk for COVID-19 outbreaks
  • Plan and execute a wide variety of outreach activities using remote meeting technology, digital outreach, and/or COVID-19 safe meeting protocols
  • Build and maintain relationships with community leaders, volunteers, and partner organizations
  • Build and maintain a working knowledge of basic COVID-19 safety measures, workplace regulations, and public response (including vaccine distribution)
  • Recruit and train volunteers to participate in various outreach activities
  • Learn to use technology necessary for text banking, phone banking, video conferencing, and social media outreach and train others to use these technologies
  • Facilitate and/or lead community meetings and volunteer outreach activities

The Ideal Candidate will:

  • Embrace inclusionary principles and enjoy working with diverse groups of people
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills and be comfortable with commonly used technology
  • Be fluent in English and Spanish
  • Be self-motivated and able to work independently and motivate others in a group setting
  • Have experience in field mobilization (canvassing or phone banking) or a strong desire to learn these skills
  • Have the ability to drive a car and travel as needed
  • Understand and believe in the mission of the Labor Movement and basic principles of organizing
