CFO/Controller

Based in Sacramento, CA

SEIU Local 1000 represents 96,000 California state employees in nine different bargaining units. Represented employees include professionals, educators, nurses and administrative and support employees. Local 1000 has approximately 200 employees who work in six offices throughout the state.

The Controller is a high profile role within SEIU Local 1000 and reports directly to the Chief of Staff. The Controller leads the Union’s financial planning and manages its budget. This position is responsible for the accounting, budgeting and reporting systems of the Union. This position is also responsible for monitoring and reporting on the financial performance of campaigns, councils and departments.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage daily operations of the Accounting Department.
  • Monitor and analyze monthly operating results against the budget.
  • Prepare the annual budget and official report of revenues and expenses.
  • Work with senior management to develop multi-year projections of operating expenses and budget needs.
  • Establish and implement systems, controls, policies, procedures and audit trails.
  • Ensure compliance with reporting requirements.
  • Participate in financial audits and recommend and implement procedural improvements.
  • Recruit, supervise, and evaluate staff.
  • Train staff and others on accounting and payroll procedures.
  • Other duties in support of the Union’s mission.

Qualifications:

  • Five or more years’ experience in a senior accounting role, including experience preparing and managing budgets and financial reports.
  • Experience implementing automated budgeting and payroll systems, establishing departmental budgets and streamlining data flow to make accurate projections.
  • Experience with finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting.
  • Ability to work long hours, and occasionally travel and work weekends.
