The Idaho Education Association seeks an Organizer and a Lead Organizer to join our team to organize and win the schools our students deserve. IEA is the largest union in Idaho representing over 17,000 educators. We are teachers, counselors, classified staff and educators that are working to keep the promise that all Idaho students deserve great public schools. IEA has a history of organizing, growth and winning improvements in public education in a deeply red state.

The persons who are selected for these positions will share our passion for public education, workers’ rights, educator voice and building power across rural and urban America. We are willing to train the right individual(s) that possess relevant experience and understanding of the job duties. The description and qualifications described below relate to the total body of responsibility for the two positions. POSITON: Lead Organizer

Duties for Lead Organizers

  • Coach and train staff and member organizers
  • Lead daily work of staff and member organizers
  • Develop and write comprehensive campaign plans with internal union stakeholders
  • Maintain data and lists
  • Identifies organizing issues and develops with other staff and local leadership issue-based campaigns
  • Develop field organizing plans with local elected leaders and for the organizing of new bargaining units
  • Oversee the day-to-day operation of campaigns
  • Evaluating campaign status
  • Conduct regular briefs and debrief of organizers
  • Work with a team and request comprehensive campaign assistance as needed
  • Develop and execute field campaign communications as needed, including email and social media
  • Reports to the organizing director on progress toward campaign goals, staff performance, and other issues concerning organizing activities
  • Assists with organizer training and ongoing development
  • Coordinates or assists with meetings, event planning, turnout, and phone banks

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of two years as a union organizer. Significant knowledge of and experience in union organizing is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and achieve goals;
  • Deep commitment to the labor movement, social, racial and education justice;
  • Experience in organizing others, building unity among diverse groups and mobilizing others to take action;
  • Ability to carry out goals and meet timelines, while demonstrating a high level of proven leadership and independent judgment within the context of an overall plan and structure;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must have experience creating plans and setting goals, and a track record of reaching them.
  • Must have demonstrated leadership abilities and ability to work with a diverse population.
  • Must be an effective communicator with excellent interpersonal and writing skills.
  • Must be competent in computer/web functions, including email, Microsoft Office Suite, databases, google documents, and Excel.
  • Ability to take direction and work well in a team.
  • Must be willing to work long and variable hours, including evenings and weekends.
  • Proof of a valid driver’s license and insured vehicle required.
  • Providing a high level of strategic input into the direction/calendar of the campaign
  • Lead debriefing of organizing staff
  • Occasionally, organizes outside of immediate assignment, including in other states
  • Helping motivate organizing staff and member leaders
  • Ability to write and conduct trainings for member leaders and organizing staff

POSITON: Organizer

Duties for Organizers

  • Organize and mobilize educators
  • Identify, recruit and develop workplace leadership
  • Provide on-the-job training for member leadership, particularly worksite leadership, on one-on-one organizing and recruitment conversations
  • Conduct and train/coach member leadership on how to conduct effective large-scale organizing and membership recruitment meetings
  • Conduct and train/coach member leadership on how to build an effective Organizing Committee
  • Identify workplace organizing issues, develop worksite organizing plans and collective action plans and execute plans with broader leadership team
  • Assist Region Directors and local leadership in local and region-wide organizing plan implementation
  • Assist in the implementation of state-wide organizing initiatives and programs
  • Make appointments for site/school visits, one-on-one visits, and other interactions with current and potential members
  • Enter assessments and other data, analyze data and track progress toward reaching goals
  • Occasional short-term travel to other parts of the state or country
  • Report to supervisor progress on planned activities and goals to appropriate colleagues and supervisor
  • Create and effect a personal development plan
  • Solicit assistance to achieve goals
  • Create workplans that reflect both the goals of the IEA and local association(s)
  • Participate in regular team meetings

Qualifications

  • Work independently and in team relationships with colleagues
  • Ability to work with a diverse set of individuals
  • Demonstrated commitment to social, racial, economic, and educational justice
  • Maintenance of a valid driver’s license and insured vehicle
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours, often with extensive travel
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in community, student, labor, political or environmental organizing
  • Fluency in Spanish is a plus!
