UDW Overview: UDW/AFSCME Local 3930 is a statewide labor union that represents more than 140,000 home care and family child care providers across California. Job Summary: UDW seeks a Communications Specialist and Staff Writer to amplify the voices of home care providers, family child care providers, and America’s working families. This position’s primary objective is to develop and execute our union’s internal, member-to-member communications as well as assist with communications for our union’s child care arm, CCPU-UDW. The right person for this job is an excellent storyteller with a demonstrated commitment to racial justice, economic justice, and social justice. This position can be based anywhere in California with ability to travel throughout the state.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Draft all written internal and member-to-member communication for UDW including blog posts, email and text message blasts, newsletters, brochures, leaflets, flyers, post cards, letters, social media content, member stories, video scripts, and general talking points.
  • Interview workers, member leaders, and union leaders and document their stories and perspectives in writing.
  • If bilingual, interview workers in their first language and translate their stories into English.
  • Update and write engaging content for UDW’s social media accounts and online communities.
  • Attend CCPU-UDW planning meetings, and assist CCPU-UDW communications coordinator with various communications needs including member-to-member communications (newsletters, email blasts, text messages, website messaging, etc.) and external communications (press, talking points, etc.) as well as developing content for social media and the web. Relay CCPU-UDW communications needs to other department staff who will assist you with these projects.
  • Assist Public Information Officer with press-related and event communications, including press outreach, prepping workers for interviews, and other speaking engagements as needed.
  • Create and maintain UDW’s worker story bank.
  • Create and obtain content for marketing materials such as member profiles and photos.
  • Research and obtain background information to support the creation of written materials.
  • Tailor written content to different audiences.
  • Communicate complex material in a manner that is easily understood.
  • Maintain message consistency across a variety of platforms.
  • Proofread marketing and outreach materials.
  • Track project timelines and tasks.
  • Help coordinate the translation of materials into multiple languages.
  • Support other activities related to UDW’s internal and external communications programs.
  • Attend and cover UDW events, including taking photos and video, talking to members, and posting to social media.
  • Assist with other communications projects such as video editing, prepping members for interviews and public speaking, and more.
  • Assist with and/or lead communications trainings for UDW members and/or staff.
  • Support other activities related to UDW’s internal and external communications programs.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bilingual Spanish/English strongly preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, particularly the ability to take complex material and make it accessible to a broad audience.
  • Works well under pressure and with tight deadlines.
  • Able to handle numerous projects at the same time and work independently.
  • Commitment to racial, social, and economic justice.
  • Well-organized, attentive to detail, and able to follow verbal instructions.
  • Creative with an eye for design.
  • Software: MS Office Suite, Adobe CS, and other graphics or design programs as needed.
  • Film editing experience a plus.
  • Experience reaching out to press and obtaining media coverage a plus.
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours, sometimes including weekends, to complete projects and support campaigns.
  • Willingness to travel, as needed.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable car.
