Member Resource Center Representative

Based in Seattle, WA

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 21 is seeking an experienced Member Resource Center (MRC) Representative. The UFCW 21 MRC Representative acts as a resource and representative for all members in matters related to UFCW 21 contracts enforcement. The MRC Representative answers questions related to the interpretation of all UFCW 21 contracts and must be familiar with working conditions, discipline issues, scheduling issues and wage placement and must frequently consult with the UFCW 21 leadership and UFCW 21 attorneys on these matters. The MRC Representative must also be familiar with relevant sections in state and federal laws protecting private and public sector workers and other appropriate labor related resource. The MRC Representative will be responsible for member call intake, processing, and distribution as they relate to grievance processing.

Requirements include:

  • Meeting with UFCW 21 Union representatives and members to resolve contract-related matters
  • Meeting with Employers/representative to investigate complaints by and against members and to negotiate settlements with the Employers on the behalf of UFCW 21 members
  • Triaging all daily incoming calls from members and Field Reps to facilitate the grievance process
  • Evaluating, reviewing and processing all grievance documents at all levels and move grievances within the timelines outlined by each contract
  • Triaging all grievances, monitoring and providing feedback to Union Representatives to ensure the appropriate documentation of member complaints and determine the viability of grievance
  • Presenting persuasive arguments on a member’s behalf with employers and when needed before an arbitrator
  • Reviewing, assessing and processing unfair labor practices if necessary
  • Keeping and managing confidential files on all cases and scan files when completed
  • Representing members at labor management meetings when required to resolve disputes
  • Preparing and presenting cases for appeals before the Executive Board of UFCW 21 and for arbitration as needed
  • Thinking creatively about grievance resolution by whatever legal means we have available including direct action by members
  • Providing guidance and assistance to union members who have filed a grievance as the grievance moves towards arbitration
  • Providing monthly and quarterly reports as they relate to the grievances processing through the Grievance Department and identify areas of improvement and process for implementation
  • Establishing and maintaining effective relationship with members and employers so that grievances can be resolved at the lowest possible level.
  • Working effectively with a team while managing multiple priorities and take on projects outside of the grievance department including attending events or assisting on campaigns
  • Designing, planning and implementing steward trainings and development programs.
  • Ensuring accurate and timely case-related data/document management using the employer’s data/document management system.
  • Communicating with the internal organizing teams and directors about organizing issues raised by member communications to the MRC.
  • May assist and/or lead in collective bargaining
  • May handle mediations, arbitrations, and unfair labor practices
  • May participate in public policy activity such as legislative and political work.
  • Mentor junior staff in leadership identification and development skills and strategies
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

  • Demonstrate a deep commitment to worker’s rights and the Labor Movement
  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the grievance process and ability to work within legally binding timelines.
  • Must have the ability to multi-task, demonstrate good judgment in making decisions within the scope of the position; ability to work independently with minimal supervision; good oral and written communication skills.
  • Bilingual applicants preferred.

Must be able to attend meetings at irregular hours; must have a valid Washington driver’s license.
