Campaign Director for Bargaining for the Common Good

Location is flexible, but we prefer either Chicago, Detroit, Los Angeles, New York City, Philadelphia,
San Antonio,
San Francisco/Oakland Bay Area, or Washington, DC.

The Action Center on Race & the Economy (ACRE) is a campaign hub for organizations working at the intersection of racial justice and corporate power. ACRE provides research and communications infrastructure and strategic support for organizations working on campaigns to win structural change by directly taking on the financial elite that are responsible for pillaging communities of color, devastating working class communities, and harming our environment.

ACRE is also one of the three convening organizations of the Bargaining for the Common Good Network (BCG), along with the Center for Innovation in Worker Organization at Rutgers University and the Kalmanovitz Initiative for Labor and the Working Poor at Georgetown University.

The Bargaining for the Common Good Network is made up of labor unions, community organizations, racial justice organizations and student organizations that work together as equal partners to win bigger and broader demands through campaigns that fight both at the bargaining table and in the streets. In these campaigns, labor and community groups work with a broad group of stakeholders to win structural demands that benefit not just union members, but also the wider community as a whole. These are campaigns for shifting power in our communities, not just settling a union contract. This role provides an exciting opportunity to help bring BCG campaigns to life from the ground up.

The Campaign Director for Bargaining for the Common Good will be based out of ACRE. The position will report directly to one of ACRE’s Co-Executive Directors and to the Staff Director of Bargaining for the Common Good.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinating and convening local unions and community groups to provide strategic campaign support for anti-austerity and Bargaining for the Common Good campaigns
  • Designing and coordinating trainings for union staff and members, and community groups on the Bargaining for the Common Good model
  • Partnering with the BCG staff to identify network needs and build network capacity
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with BCG Advisory Committee members
  • Collaborating with BCG staff to help plan BCG Advisory Committee meetings
  • Supporting fundraising efforts, such as preparing concept papers and reports, and participating in funder meetings
  • Contributing creatively to a forward-thinking team

Qualifications:

  • A strong commitment to progressive social change and racial justice, a familiarity with the issues that are central to ACRE’s and BCG’s work and a passion for ACRE’s and BCG’s visions
  • At least five years of experience as a lead organizer or lead campaigner for unions or grassroots community organizations (internal organizing experience with a union would be helpful)
  • Excellent strategic and comprehensive campaigning skills
  • Experience with collective bargaining campaigns (familiarity with public sector bargaining would be helpful)
  • Strong critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in politically sensitive and high-pressure environments
  • Demonstrated commitment to community and/or labor organizing and experience working with women and communities of color for social change
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with organizers
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently
  • Willingness to travel extensively when it is safe to do so
  • Willingness to work remotely
  • Effective time management skills, including prioritizing and managing multiple tasks, with light supervision
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours
  • A good sense of humor

LGBTQ, women and people of color strongly encouraged to apply.
