Position Title: Full Time Field Organizer
Location: Lexington, KY

“United Campus Workers of Kentucky is a union committed to promoting social, racial, gender, environmental and economic justice on our higher education campuses and their public healthcare partners in Kentucky, in order to improve working conditions and quality of life for all students, patients, faculty, and staff.”

University of Kentucky staff and faculty started organizing around workplace issues in the Fall of 2019 and went public as a union and chartered as an affiliate of the Communication Workers of America, United Campus Workers of Kentucky, Local 3365 in March 2020. There are now more than 240 dues paying members, along with working committees, and local campus based campaigns. UCWKY currently has chapters at UK, UK Healthcare, and in the Kentucky Community and Technical College System. Organizers are responsible primarily for new organizing and recruitment, leadership development, and movement building with community and student allies.

The Full-Time Field Organizers will be accountable to the local union steering committee, the membership at large, the local lead organizer and the two full-time campaign organizers that work for the Communications Workers of America who are responsible for coordinating an innovative regional project to organize public higher education employees across the Southeast, in right-to-work states, without collective bargaining rights.

On-the-job training for these positions is provided, with potential travel to campaigns at various points of development across the state and region.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct worksite and home visits and recruit new members to the union
  • Establish organizing committees and work with existing members to build membership, support leadership development, and expand capacity
  • Implement organizing program and help develop campaign plans
  • Support research and development of potential organizing projects

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends
  • Strong commitment to social justice and the labor movement
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work on a team, as well as take individual initiative with minimal supervision
  • Ability to handle stressful situations
  • Driver’s license and reliable access to car
  • Previous union or community organizing experience
  • Knowledge of basic office and computer technology (MS Office, email, database programs, etc.)
  • Access to a cell phone and personal computer
  • Previous work history of supporting leadership development, legislative/lobbying and/or policy advocacy experience, and advanced knowledge of technology applications, website, basic design, etc. preferred.
