Communications Organizer

Based in Annapolis, MD

Representing all educators in Anne Arundel County Public Schools. the 6,500, member Teachers Association of Anne Arundel County (TAAAC), with offices in Annapolis, Maryland seeks an experienced Union Communications Organizer that can seamlessly move between the Organizer and Communicator rolls to help build member power. TAAAC an NEA and MSEA affiliate, supports, organizes, and empowers members to improve their professional lives in order to provide, protect, and promote quality public education for every one of the County’s 85,000 students. The Association is entering its 100th year and is governed by Officers, a Board of Directors, and delegates to a Representative Assembly which are all elected by educator members. The Communications Organizer is a new position and joins eight additional staff members.

This position reports to the Executive Director. The Communications Organizer will be responsible for supporting all aspects of the Local Union’s digital organizing and other messaging directed toward members, community supporters and the public. Experience with union campaigns is preferred for this exciting new opportunity to help build out TAAAC’s communications and organizing capacity.
Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead, in unison with President, ED and other staff, the development and design of the best and most targeted manner to communicate with membership
  • Monitor, update and create content for organizational messages and profiles on social media platforms
  • Develop digital materials for internal and external organizing and other campaigns
  • Support digital communication programs including email, social media, text messaging, website and paid marketing
  • Produce well-written, concise messaging that supports larger organizational initiatives for social media, email, text messaging programs, press releases, and newsletter content
  • Train affiliate staff, leaders and member activists in using digital programs
  • Compile website, email and social networking analytics into reports
  • Represent our Union as assigned in community and labor coalition activities
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings and regular debriefs

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with coursework in communications, journalism, labor studies, political science or liberal arts
  • Minimum two years of relevant work experience with online and other traditional communications or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • Demonstrated ability to use online and traditional tools to communicate with and motivate target groups to act, including email, text messaging, social media, and paid marketing (organizing)
  • Ability to execute multi-channel communications campaigns.
  • Experience creating engaging content for traditional leaflets and online consumption. Graphic design experience also preferred
  • Experience using a customer relationship management system (e.g. Action Network)
  • Strong writing skills, with the ability to condense information and convey it clearly and concisely. Ability to train staff with varying skill levels on the use of digital tools.
  • Experience using Excel to compile analytics reports. (Google tools are also used by almost all TAAAC educators in the virtual instruction environment and familiarity with the same is preferred)
  • Ability to work independently and to collaborate and work well with staff at all levels and in a team environment
  • Ability to juggle competing priorities and work extended hours to meet deadlines.
  • Flexibility, positive attitude, superior attention to details
  • Interest in the labor movement and progressive social change
  • Capacity to lift to 25 pounds

Ability to begin work in March, best works with TAAAC needs. Salary is negotiable within a range and based on experience.
