(requires travel across the state)

AFT Michigan is seeking an experienced and energized person to join our dynamic statewide union of educators and healthcare providers as a Political & Legislative Coordinator. Our team works with approximately 100 local unions across the state to build strong locals, develop leadership, bargain and enforce contracts, organize, and work for social justice. This position may be based in Lansing or Detroit but requires travel across the state.

The Political & Legislative Coordinator will work closely with AFT Michigan leaders to:

  • Build and manage AFT Michigan relationships with legislators, state agencies, and partner organizations;
  • Develop proactive statewide political and legislative campaign plans;
  • Coordinate AFT Michigan political fundraising and distribution plans;
  • Represent AFT Michigan within coalitions and in discussions with policymakers and staff;
  • Coordinate a statewide network of local union political coordinators;
  • Keep leaders and members up to date on legislative and policy issues by providing accessible and informative summaries of key issues;
  • Coordinate work performed by organizations contracted by AFT Michigan to support our political and legislative efforts;
  • Train members in legislative, political action and mobilization skills;
  • Coordinate with allied organizations to build support for public education, healthcare and social justice;
  • Encourage member participation in political and legislative action;
  • Build a stronger AFT Michigan and labor movement; and
  • Accomplish other duties and special projects as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Independent project management skills
  • Leadership development and training ability
  • Ability to work with people from a wide range of backgrounds
  • Ability to listen actively and frame issues
  • Knowledge of organizing strategies, collective bargaining, and contract enforcement
  • Experience in unions or other social justice organizations
  • Engagement in the political process
  • Demonstrated ability to write and speak effectively
  • General computer literacy and proficiency in basic data management, social media
  • Willingness to work long hours and participate in union-wide activities
  • Knowledge of PreK-16 education, healthcare and labor issues preferred
  • Campaign management experience preferred
  • Communications and media outreach experience preferred

Competitive salary and excellent benefits commensurate with the contract between AFT Michigan and the AFT Michigan Staff Union.
