SUMMARY
SEBAC, Connecticut’s coalition of unions representing state employees, has an immediate opening for Coordinator/Communicator and is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the full-time position. The Coalition serves to unite all 16 unions representing approximately 45,000 full and part-time state employees who are there every day for the people of Connecticut.

SCOPE
The Coordinator/Communicator will support the Coalition’s ongoing operations, public and media relations, legislative advocacy, political engagement and contract negotiating campaigns. Responsibilities also will include intra-union membership communications, such as creation and maintenance of a website and social media channels as well as regular e-mail communications. The position begins with a one year working test period.

DIRECTION
The Coordinator/Communicator will report directly to the Coalition’s chief negotiator and will work with the Coalition’s communications committee which consists of affiliated unions’ staff members, as well as with other constituent union staff as appropriate. Ultimate direction will come from Coalition Leadership.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Coordination:
Provide coordination for the ongoing operations of the Coalition including assisting in the implementation of Leadership decisions; and provide strategic and tactical recommendations to the Chief Negotiator and Leadership in achieving Coalition objectives. Work with union leaders and staff to assist in the efforts of the unions within the Coalition to carry out the common strategic direction chosen by Coalition leadership.

Communication:
Responsibilities include proposing, creating and implementing select aspects of the coalition’s collective strategic internal and external communications program, and managing crisis communications as needed.

  • Research (when necessary), write and edit print communications pieces, including flyers, brochures, media releases, and commentary intended both for union members, opinion leaders and the general public.
  • Write and edit web and electronic communications, including maintaining a coalition website, social media channels and preparing direct email communications to union members, elected officials and news media.
  • Assist with public relations and communications, including organizing media events, preparing press advisories and releases, and training and supporting workers to effectively tell their stories to the public.

REQUIREMENTS AND PREFERENCES
Requirements

  • Demonstrated commitment to the labor movement
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to take initiative and to handle multiple projects and tight deadlines.
  • General computer literacy and technological skills, including, proficiency in Microsoft Word, digital photography.
  • Knowledge of digital communications and related programs, and of maintaining web and social media platforms

Preferences

  • Significant experience staffing labor or other progressive organizations preferred
  • Experience with advocacy communications and storytelling
  •  Knowledge of Connecticut
