Communications Coordinator

Based in Houston, TX

Annual Pay: $60,000 to $65,000

This is a Full Time Position
SEIU Texas unites janitors, food service workers, hospital employees and county/municipal employees from across our state. We are seeking an energetic, passionate and dedicated individual interested in building a career in social justice labor organizing, and build power for working families in a right to work state.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement communications strategies (including social media) and materials to support SEIU Texas campaigns and development;
  • Establish and manage relationships with the media to move our message;
  • Train SEIU Texas staff and leaders on communications strategies, and digital and social media;
  • Write talking points, letters to the editor, op-eds, fact sheets, press kit materials, leaflets, newsletters, original content for emails, blogs post and social media;
  • Develop and manage organizational and campaign email programs;
  • Monitor media coverage of campaigns and make recommendations to improve coverage;
  • Train and prepare spokespeople for events and to speak with the media;
  • Manage event communications – strategy, message, visuals, materials, media outreach, videography, photography, event flow and agenda;
  • Manage digital communications infrastructure and working with Data to streamline data/email integration;
  • Some travel within Texas will be required.

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science degree in Communications or another related field.
  • 3-5 years of related work experience or a combination of education and experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills and abilities:
  • Knowledge of media relations strategies and ability to establish relationships with reporters;
  • Excellent writing, verbal, and analytical skills;
  • Proficiency in digital media, including website maintenance, email and online campaign tools, and social media;
  • Understanding of nonprofit and/or progressive campaign communications strategies;
  • Ability to think proactively and seize on opportunities to move our message forward;
  • Knowledge of paid media strategy and experience creating effective paid media;
  • Ability to frame issues for specific audiences and develop effective advocacy materials;
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and meet established deadlines;
  • Demonstrated commitment to social and economic justice.

Compensation:

  • Salary commensurate with experience.
