Job Summary
Demonstrate a passion and competency for resolving workplace disputes promptly and effectively, utilizing a number of methods, including contract enforcement and interest-based problem solving. Understand the applicable collective bargaining agreements and advise union members about the contracts and the dispute resolution processes. Communicate relevant information to the union membership in an effective manner and instill strong union values within the facilities and departments assigned. A Union Representative must continually be able to grow the Wyoming membership by signing up potential members. This requires building relationships with potential members and speaking to them about the importance of union membership and all of its benefits.

Essential Responsibilities

Membership Service

  • Become acquainted with members in the assigned facilities and departments;
  • Resolve workplace disputes, utilizing a variety of methods, including interest-based problem solving and contract enforcement;
  • Zealously represent the interests of union members with company representatives;
  • Process grievances and represent members in investigatory and grievance meetings;
  • Investigate violations of the collective bargaining agreements and other rights;
  • Document and compile relevant evidence and information from investigations;
  • Resolve workplace disputes and grievances by meeting with labor relations and operations representatives;
  • Understand the dispute resolution process and advise members about the same;
  • Present unresolved grievances to the executive grievance committee, recommending whether to arbitrate or withdraw grievances;
  • Testify, investigate, and provide information as necessary for arbitration to assist the legal department.
  • Communicate with members about union matters, grievances, negotiations, and other relevant information.

Develop Union Capacity

  • Select, train, and consult shop stewards and other leaders;
  • Identify leaders in the workplace and encourage their involvement in union and labor-management partnership activities.

Provide Support for Political Activities

  • Engage in political campaigns and related activities, when assigned, including walking precincts; speaking with voters; advocating for issues that impact union members; advocating with elected officials about important worker issues; publicly promoting union values;
  •  Support the active ballot club;
  •  Register voters.

Paperwork

  • Register new members within 90 days;
  • Correct member address and phone number information;
  • Ensure contract books are available in store and to all members;
  • Present UFCW Local 7 information and contract information at new membership classes, encouraging participation in the union;
  • Prepare required reports.

Assist with Contract Negotiations

  • Consult with union members about their interests;
  • Prepare bargaining proposals;
  • Assist in or conduct negotiations as directed;
  • Assist or work with bargaining committees.

Job Requirements

  • Consistently demonstrate strong service behaviors; strong organizational skills; detail-oriented; knowledgeable, analytical, and compassionate.
  • Must be a self-starter and able to work independently.
  • This position covers the State of Wyoming. Relocation to the state is necessary.
  • Overnight stays an average of 3-4 nights per week is required.
  • All applicants must have a minimum of two years of union affiliation.
