Associate General Counsel

The Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) has immediate openings for two Attorney positions in the ATU Legal Department.

Under the direction of the General Counsel, the Associate General Counsels will work with the Legal Department to provide advice to international and local union officers and staff on a wide variety of legal, regulatory, and administrative matters. The department provides guidance and counsel on matters of internal union governance including compliance with the international and local union constitutions, the LMRDA and DOL regulations, and pertinent state and provincial laws. On a regular basis the Associate General Counsels will respond to issues of federal, state and provincial labor, transportation, employment and employee benefits law.

Department attorneys will assist strategic organizing, bargaining and anti-privatization campaigns, including by performing research and advising on a wide range of policy issues. Policy issues addressed by the Department will include transit funding, transportation network companies, autonomous vehicles, privatization, commercial driver’s licenses requirements, drug and alcohol testing, safety and other matter of public concern.

Applicants must have one to five years of experience in labor law, and must have a demonstrated commitment to the labor movement. Litigation experience before the NLRB, state labor relations boards, federal and state courts, and arbitrators is strongly preferred. Public policy, strategic campaigning and organizing experience will be considered. The applicant should have excellent research, writing and analytical skills, be able to multi-task and manage multiple projects, be capable of handling assignments with minimal supervision, and work well in a collegial setting with other attorneys and staff.

The Amalgamated Transit Union was founded in 1892, and is the largest labor organization representing transit workers in the United States and Canada with over 200,000 members in over local unions spread across 46 states and nine provinces.

The Associate General Counsels will work out of the ATU’s headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland.
