Part-Time Organizer

Based at University of Michigan, Ann Arbor Campus
 

The Lecturers’ Employee Organization (LEO), AFT Michigan Local 6244, AFL-CIO, the union representing non-tenure-track faculty at the University of Michigan (UM), is seeking to hire a Part-Time Organizer for the UM Ann Arbor campus (50% or 20 hrs/wk appointment). This is a project position for the duration of LEO’s 2020-2021 contract campaign (at minimum the Fall 2020 and Winter 2021 semesters). LEO represents over 1600 non-tenure-track faculty on 3 campuses (Ann Arbor, Dearborn and Flint). The Ann Arbor campus has about 1100 of these bargaining unit members. We are largely a volunteer organization with a strong organizing ethos.

Brief Description of Responsibilities

  • Work with the campus leadership, lead organizer, and activist members to organize lecturers across the Ann Arbor UM campus
  • Identify, recruit and develop members to participate in the organizing process
  • Respond to the decisions of a volunteer-run organization
  • Represent LEO to members and community
  • Help manage membership data

LEO requires applicants to have:

  • Organizing experience, especially related to unions, higher education and/or political action
  • Strong one-to-one organizing skills and willingness to engage lecturers on campus and at their homes
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed
  • Willingness to travel to other UM campuses on occasion
  • Willingness to implement organizing plans as decided by LEO leadership
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to work with other campus stakeholders in coalitional efforts
  • Ability to facilitate groups
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate others
  • Ability to solve problems creatively and cooperatively

LEO prefers applicants to have:

  • Experience with a volunteer-run organization and/or a coalitional campaign
  • Strong commitment to social justice and the labor movement
  • Basic computing and data systems knowledge
  • Experience working with diverse populations

LEO hopes to hire an organizer to start as soon as possible upon receipt of the offer, which we hope to make by the second week of September, and no later than September 21, 2020. The annual salary for a 50% appointment is $25,500. Healthcare and other benefits are provided.
