Warehouse Workers for Justice (WWJ) is a worker center fighting for good, living wage jobs among the thousands of transportation and logistics workers in the Chicago area, the largest intermodal logistics hub on the planet. Our work blends union and worker’ center models, focusing on long-term leadership development, alliances with community organizations, and development of innovative organizing tactics.
This position will support WWJ’s Food Chain Emergency Response and Organizing Project. Organizer will be responsible for intensive outreach to warehouse supply chain workers to educate them on their legal rights, networking workers to free legal resources as well as other resiliency resources (Access to PPE, COVID Testing, etc.). Our efforts will be targeted to some of the most marginalized workers in the warehouse supply chain including temp workers, formerly incarcerated workers and immigrant workers among others.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute field plan
- Promote WWJ’s Ongoing Know Your Rights and Emergency Response Efforts to Food Supply Chain Workers
- Distribute Know Your Rights Materials and PPE Materials to Foodchain Workers
- Assist Organizing Team in Growing WWJ’s leadership committees
- Conduct worker outreach efforts
- Lead one-on-one and group meetings with workers
- Identify and develop workplace leaders
- Assist Organizing Team in building worker’s committees
- Maintain accurate information on worksites and campaign activities
- Gather information necessary for enforcement of labor laws
Requirements:
- Previous organizing experience a plus
- Ability to make and execute a workplan
- Ability to work independently
- Willingness to work long hours, including nights and weekends
- A working vehicle and a valid drivers’ license
- Basic computer and writing skills
- A strong commitment to social justice
- Spanish speaking is a plus
- Joliet or Will County based a plus
Will be supervised by WWJ’s Lead Organizer.
Salary is 45 – 52k depending on experience. This is a special project and we can only ensure employment for a year, although there is a possibility it will be extended. Benefits and car allowance are provided.
