Trade Justice Organizers

Openings in Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania

The Trade Justice Education Fund (TJEF) is a new nonprofit that sponsors public education programs designed to expand awareness about the worker rights, environmental and public health implications of U.S. trade policy.

TJEF’s mission includes increasing public understanding of just and sustainable visions for global trade, as opposed to the business-as-usual neoliberalism and racist nationalism that are often presented as the limits of the trade policy debate.

With deep roots in the labor, environmental, family farm, faith and consumer movements, TJEF’s officers and directors together have decades of leadership experience in trade issue education.

TJEF is currently seeking two contract Organizers to lead trade justice outreach efforts in Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania. These positions are six-month contracts, paying $4,500 – $6,000/month depending upon experience.

Primary Responsibilities
The purpose of these positions is to educate people throughout the Midwest who are already somewhat open to hearing trade messages about progressive proposals for international trade rules. Main responsibilities include:

  • Organizing a series of regional teach-ins and press events on trade-related topics via Zoom webinar and (if/when safe) in-person events, including by recruiting local presenters, handling logistics, generating event turnout and moderating.
  • Recruiting grasstops leaders and grassroots activists to submit Op-Eds and Letters to the Editor on trade justice, and to promote TJEF-generated material via social media;
  • Conducting a high volume of outreach to labor, environmental and community group leaders via telephone, email, snail mail and (if/when safe) in-person meetings to offer trade-related educational resources;
  • Presenting on trade at labor, environmental and community group meetings via telephone, web conference and (if/when safe) in-person, and potentially tabling at conferences and events; and
  • Other community outreach and education activities as needed.

Qualifications
Only highly-organized self-starters should consider applying for these positions. Successful candidates will:

  • Have a deep commitment to and passion for social and economic justice;
  • Have at least three years organizing experience and a proven track-record of working well independently;
  • Have experience recruiting and working with volunteers and developing volunteer leadership;
  • Have strong communication skills and be comfortable with public speaking, meeting facilitation and writing;
  • Be able to work within a budget and to record and report on one’s work;
  • Be comfortable working with labor unions, environmental groups, faith organizations and people of diverse races, sexualities, gender identities, faiths and political backgrounds; and
  • Fluency in languages beyond English is a strong plus

Hours, Location & Compensation
These positions will cover organizing in Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Candidates located in any of those states are welcome to apply, with a strong preference that at least one organizer be based in Michigan.

These are full-time, six-month contracts paying $4,500 – $6,000/month depending upon experience.
