Based in Shreveport, LA

The Red River United Organizing Project is seeking a Union Organizer in Shreveport, Louisiana. This is a full-time, entry level position. Organizers are responsible for a variety of aspects of a campaign including building relationships with workers, developing issues-based organizing plans for assigned areas, and for recruiting and sustaining motivation of organizing committee members and activists. This is a joint project between the Red River United Organizing Project and the American Federation of Teachers.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Dedicated to social and economic justice
  2. Dedicated to public education and fighting for the rights of teachers and service personnel
  3. Ability to work with individuals different from one’s self
  4. Ability to work long and irregular hours (not a 9-5 job)
  5. Ability to work independently with grit, resolve, and self-motivation
  6. Ability to travel at a moment’s notice to work on campaigns and other actions that are needed or required by AFT or RRU
  7. Ability to receive and implement feedback
  8. Strong written and verbal communication skills
  9. Strong computer literacy
  10. Strong social media literacy
  11. Is flexible with changes to current plans and is willing to do what is needed to get the job done

Experience in labor/union, community, student, civil rights, or environmental activism or organizing is highly preferred. Training will be provided for the right individual.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Organize and mobilize workers
  2. Attend weekly meetings with supervisors to discuss progress and plan activities
  3. One-on-one visits, site visits, meetings, and other interaction with members and prospective members (during or outside of school hours)
  4. Enter assessments and other data collected in a database on a weekly basis
  5. Occasionally, be assigned to other parts of the state or country as required
  6. Take direction on daily and weekly activities to grow AFT membership and accomplish the overarching union vision

SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Established by the collective bargaining agreement.

Salary: $41,200.00 /year

Required education:

  • B.A. or A.A. degree is a plus, but not required

Required experience:

  • labor/union, community, student, civil rights, or environmental activism/organizing; 1 year currently or previously worked in public schools is a plus but not a requirement

Required licenses or certifications:

  • Working Vehicle/Car
  • Driving License
