National Research Coordinator

Founded initially after September 11th, 2001, the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United (ROC) has grown into a national organization with more than 30,000 low-wage restaurant worker members in New York, California, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Orleans, Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC. Our mission is to improve wages and working conditions for the nation’s restaurant workforce.

Over the last 19 years, we have organized to win over $10 million in misappropriated tips and wages and discrimination payments for low-wage workers, and significant policy changes in high-profile fine dining restaurant companies covering thousands of workers. We have partnered with hundreds of responsible restaurant owners to promote the ‘high road’ to profitability, and trained more than 5,000 restaurant workers to advance to livable wage jobs within the industry. We also operate restaurants called COLORS that serve as the base for our workforce- development training and membership programs in New York, Detroit, and Oakland.

We have published over sixty ground-breaking reports on the restaurant industry, obtaining significant media coverage, that have played an instrumental role in winning state and local minimum wage increases and paid sick days for all restaurant workers, advanced one fair wage for tipped workers, and supported dozens of policy campaigns at the local, state, and federal level. We have surveyed over 8,000 restaurant workers and have interviewed hundreds of workers and employers. Our research has helped shed light on the negative impact of payroll cards, demonstrated racial bias in hiring at fine dining restaurants, and highlighted the impact of different wage policy regimes on sexual harassment. We are currently in the midst of expanding this research to examine the effect of wages and benefits on stress and common health, including mental health indicators. We are also in the initial stages of forming a national panel of restaurant workers to expand our research horizon.

We are looking to hire an experienced, energetic individual with a strong commitment to methodological rigor to strengthen and expand our national research program. The National Research Coordinator is responsible for ensuring the development, implementation, and rigorous analysis of multiple research projects necessary to achieve the goals of ROC-United.

Responsibilities include:

• Plan, direct, and conduct social science and strategic research to promote policy, high road, and workplace justice prongs, including data collection, analysis, report writing, and release events
• Ensure accurate and rigorous methodology for quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis
• Train and assist local organizers in implementing national and local research projects
• Assist in training and mentoring of research fellows and interns
• Track market and industry trends and economic indicators both regionally and nationally
• Assist organizing team in the development and execution of tactics to support campaign strategies, including comprehensive analysis of target companies
• Represent the organization during public hearings, community meetings, academic conferences, media events, etc.
• Coordinate research projects with other academic and community researchers
• Ensure projects stay within designated budgets and timeline, produce written materials for internal and public use, and promptly answer media and other information requests
• Assist in obtaining research grants

Preferred qualifications:

• Five years research, writing, and corporate campaign experience
• PhD in Psychology, Sociology, Economics, or related field
• Expertise in policy, economic, strategic, and/or health and safety research
• Familiarity with measures of allostatic load
• Familiarity and comfort with quantitative and qualitative analysis software
• Experience in community or social movement organizing
• Passionate commitment to social, economic and racial justice
• Strong organizational skills, including the ability to work independently and manage own projects
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Must have a flexible schedule to accommodate some weekend and evening hours
• Restaurant experience a plus

Compensation negotiable based on experience, plus benefits.
