Staff Representative

Based in Baltimore, MD

AFSCME Council 67 represents over 10,000 workers throughout the state including county and public school employees, correctional officers, clerical support staff and nurses. We organize in the workplace and fight for dignity, respect and a fair standard of living for all public service workers in MD.

We have an opening for a Staff Representative in Baltimore, MD.

Responsibilities:

  • Advise and assist local unions with collective bargaining.
  • Advise and assist local officers and stewards on grievance investigations and appeals.
  • Mobilize membership on group grievances and work place issues.
  • Train and develop stewards and officers in grievances and other aspects of their duties.
  • Recruit new stewards and leaders.
  • Recruit new members through house visits and site visits.
  • Visit sites within assigned turf to execute organizing campaign plans.
  • Plan and execute internal organizing campaigns with local unions and the council.
  • Plan and execute PEOPLE drives to increase participation in the union’s political program.

Qualifications:

  • At least one year of successful union organizing or servicing experience.
  • Ability to move workers to get involved with the union.
  • Ability to articulate how a union works.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and coordinate work activities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with co-workers and members.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct research and gather information for negotiations, arbitrations, strategy development and other servicing and organizing activities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Willingness and ability to work long and irregular hours and weekends. Some travel required.
