Organizational Overview:

Purpose:
The Director of the Public Division creates and oversees the implementation of the Division’s strategic plan in furtherance of the SEIU’s plan and goals. This includes development and execution of the Division’s campaigns, local union relations and unionwide strategies.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Works in collaboration with Executive Vice President, Division Leadership Board, Sector Councils and Committees and staff to develop goals, objectives, plans, and budgets for the division.
  • Recruits, hires, evaluates, develops and supervises division and (as necessary) local union staff including Deputy Directors, managers, organizers, administrative, political and communications staff.
  • Assists and organizes local unions in developing short-term and long-term strategies including but not limited to governance, financial welfare, employer relations, member engagement, offense campaigns, and external organizing.
  • Drives local union leaders to implement SEIU programs, including Together We Rise, political turnaround, organizing, and to achieve unionwide economic and racial justice goals.
  • Ensures Local Unions follow dues requirements and COPE obligations.
  • Establishes and maintains strategic employee relations including but not limited to collective bargaining, organizing partnership and other strategic alliances, in partnership with Division leaders.
  • Develops the Division’s long-term vision and strategies, in partnership with the EVP and Division leaders.
  • Manages Division budget and is accountable for its spending. Recommends allocation of subsidy payments to local unions supporting the division program.
  • Collaborates with Officers and other Division and Department Directors in developing a comprehensive program for SEIU.
  • Performs other duties as assigned in support of the work of the Division.

Direction and Decision Making:
This position reports to the Executive Vice President for the Public Division, the Secretary-Treasurer, and the International President yet has a great deal of autonomy in decision making for the Division.

Qualification Requirements:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in labor relations, public administration, political science or liberal arts and 10 or more years’ experience, OR a combination of education and experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of SEIU Public Division issues, industries, and campaigns
  • Thorough knowledge of various union organizing theories, strategies, and tactics
  • Detailed knowledge of field organizing, corporate social responsibility, and policy campaigns
  • Extensive knowledge of unions especially local union structures, interests, and systems
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Proven ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds/cultures and manage large diverse teams
  • Handling multiple priorities and meeting established timelines
  • Working with SEIU elected leadership and staff in complex & sometimes politically sensitive situations

Physical Requirements:
Must have the ability to work in an office (or similar) setting with or without reasonable accommodation. Travel in addition to long and extended work hours are required.
