Description:
The New York City Chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (NYC-DSA) is seeking a staff member to help out with the administrative responsibilities of the organization, as well as assisting in organizing our priority political campaigns. This position is a one year temporary part time position with the possibility of becoming permanent after the completion of one year.

Primary Responsibilities:
The function of all the below responsibilities is to facilitate the organizing work of DSA members across NYC-DSA.

  • Keeping track of task follow-through for Convention, CLC, and SC proposals and resolutions. This would include following up with members and elected leaders to ensure democratic decisions are carried out in a timely manner.
  • Helping to streamline our outward facing communications and propaganda, including email, social media, and our website.
  • Database management, including keeping an updated list of members and their information, an updated list of non-member contacts and their information, an accurate list of Branch membership, etc. This would require continuous communication with branches and campaigns to ensure that lists are regularly submitted to the central database and to ensure that information is available to organizers when needed.
  • Recruiting more members to participate in our voluntary monthly dues program and organizing other fundraising activities. Fundraising goals for the Chapter will be set to cover a full time employee and an office space within 18 months of the hiring. The Administrative Committee will set fundraising goals for the staff person based on this objective taking into account the 1 year temporary agreement.
  • When our priority campaigns have big pushes, e.g. major GOTV efforts before an election or important rallies that need extra turn out, the staff person will be directed to help organize these efforts. This could include organizing phone banks or canvasses, sign-making parties, getting permits for rallies, organizing trainings, facilitating sign and flyer printing and logistics, getting sound amplification systems or projection systems, etc.

Possible Additional Tasks, Time Permitting:

  • Helping Branches and Working Groups book space for their events and post events and propaganda on our various social media platforms and websites.
  • Help the Steering Committee reply to email inquiries.
  • Manage any office we may have.
  • Organizing the convention and CLC meetings.
  • Managing the citywide storage space until an office space is secured, as well as all citywide material resources including banners, posters, flags, and translation equipment.
  • Other duties as directed by the Administrative Committee

Requirements:
Strong organization, interpersonal and communication skills required. Must be skilled at navigating inquiries from a variety of sources, and have the ability to plan, prioritize and balance the workload of several projects simultaneously. Should be able to work independently, with some oversight from the NYC-DSA Administrative Committee. Must be able to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion and in accordance with organizational policies. Past organizing experience a plus. The position allows flexibility in the schedule, but also will require some weekend and evening work. The candidate must live in the NYC metropolitan area. Must be committed to the values of democratic socialism.
