United for Respect (UFR) and United for Respect Education Fund (UFREF) is a national organization building an industry voice of people working for the country’s largest retail corporations. Through scaled leadership development and base-building, UFR’s growing network is challenging major corporations and policymakers to provide family‐sustaining jobs for all working people. We leverage technology — social media and our digital platform, WorkIt — and bring the retail workforce into a shared community of support and advocacy.

United for Respect is seeking a Civic Engagement Manager to drive civic engagement programs across the organization and in key targeted states. Key program initiatives that this position will be responsible for moving include, but are not limited to:

  • Civic Engagement: voter registration and turnout, education and issue advocacy, and constituency engagement.
  • Comprehensive Political Campaign: coordinating research and messaging to create communications and digital media assets.

Job Responsibilities
The Civic Engagement Manager will work as part of the Policy and Politics team at United for Respect and report directly to the Political Director. Working in collaboration across departments, the Civic Engagement Manager will:

  • Program Development & Management: Develop, drive and manage the overall success of UFR’s comprehensive civic engagement program that builds a powerful voting bloc of people in low wage jobs. Implement a collaborative and facilitative approach to leadership, including the ability to effectively manage participatory decision-making processes.
  • Planning Coordination: Lead an across departmental team that creates strategy, workflows, solve problems, shares information and builds capacity that drives a member to member and robust scalable turnout program in targeted states using our relational online to offline organizing model.
  • Training: Design and conduct programmatic and quality control training and tools with a team of field organizers, and members. Develop leadership development training so members are the political voices in their communities.
  • Strategic Partnerships: Maintain and build national and state political relationships with elected officials, key stakeholders, and civic engagement coalition tables. Includes ongoing participation, coordination and alignment with state civic engagement tables.
  • Communications Coordination: Collaborate with communications, digital and political teams to create a comprehensive political communications plan that 1) amplifies worker leadership and stories online and in the media and 2) and uses polling and research to demonstrate the brightline between candidates that support or oppose our agenda.

Qualifications:

  • Highly motivated individual with a passion for transforming the lives of working people in low-wage jobs.
  • Minimum 2-3 cycles of campaign work in electoral, labor or community-based organizations, including at least one cycle or year of managing a team.
  • Strong planning skills, including the ability to develop civic engagement plans, reports and tracking methods of deliverables.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, ability to empathize, connect, and work with workers in low-wage jobs from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to work well within multiple coalitions and with people from diverse communities, including staff and leaders of community organizations.
  • Strong data analytical and tracking skills, including experience with VAN, EveryAction, peer to peer texting, predictive dialer, relational organizing and other electoral tools and systems.
  • Experiencing with online civic engagement programs is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, on the phone, video and in writing.
  • Strong project management and problem solving skills to manage multiple projects at one time.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and manage time efficiently.
  • Ability to work nights and weekends.
  • Ability to travel regularly.
  • Comfortable with a remote work culture.
  • Experience with distributed organizing a plus.

Salary Range: $65,000 to $85,000
