The Southern California Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health (SoCalCOSH) is hiring a Director to advance worker health and safety in the Southern California region!

The Southern California Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health (SoCalCOSH), advocates for safe, healthy, and secure jobs for all workers, and aims to disrupt the root causes of work-related injuries, illnesses, and fatalities. We build worker power through coalition-building, direct action, training, and education & leadership development. The organization is founded on the principle that workplace injuries, illnesses, and deaths are preventable.

This work will include a focus on advocating for the rights of low-wage, immigrant, queer, and BIPOC workers in the workplace. The Director will work with community-based organizations, unions and worker centers to promote safe and healthy jobs through outreach, training, education and policy initiatives.

SoCalCOSH is part of a vibrant network of approximately 20 COSH groups throughout the United States that work at the local, state and national level to ensure worker health and safety protections and a voice for all workers.

The Director reports to the SoCalCOSH Board and will work closely with the Coordinator and Lead Organizer/Trainer. They will coordinate monthly Board meetings, lead strategic planning efforts for the organization, ensure successful implementation of grant-funded programs, and play a leadership role with a statewide network of worker advocacy organizations to strengthen workplace policies and workers’ ability to organize for safe jobs. SoCalCOSH is a fiscally sponsored project of Community Partners and the Director will consult regularly with Community Partners staff.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Ensure completion of existing and new grant deliverables, and identify new revenue streams that support SoCalCOSH’s mission to build health & safety capacity of worker organizations, increase worker education on health and safety issues in the workplace, and promote policy change in the region
  • Coordinate monthly meetings of the SoCalCOSH Board to discuss and maintain an updated work plan
  • Support SoCalCOSH in convening quarterly meetings of the LA, IE, and CA OSH Activist Networks, and support the growth of networks in regions across Southern California
  • Assist with the planning, outreach and facilitation of public events and workplace safety meetings
  • Implement outreach and communication strategies through various social media platforms (i.e. website, Facebook, listservs, etc.)
  • Serve as the primary media contact and spokesperson for the organization
  • Perform program administrative duties required by the organization, Community Partners, and funders
  • Supervise and work closely with SoCalCOSH staff, including the coordinator and lead trainer/organizer
  • Participate in national and statewide calls and an annual conference to create strategies that advance worker health and safety through outreach, education and policy initiatives (i.e. CASE-FOWW, National COSH)
  • Frequently communicate with health & safety partners in the region to ensure our work is coordinated, and not duplicative

Job Skills:

  • Highly organized. Ability to work independently, without supervision, take initiative, and use judgment to know when to consult with Board members
  • Experience with grant management and fundraising
  • Excellent outreach, facilitation and communication skills
  • Experience working in the labor movement, doing direct worker organizing, and implementing health & safety education and strategies in their work
  • Experience working with coalitions
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations. Bilingual (English-Spanish preferred)
  • Experience with public speaking; training and education skills a plus
  • Experience supervising staff; e.g. staff, volunteers, interns
  • Experience with long-term and strategic planning
  • Knowledge of website design & maintenance experience is a plus

Salary range $75,000 – $85,000, commensurate with experience. Health, Dental, Vision, and life insurance benefits.
