Economist

The Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) is seeking an Economist to start in June of 2020 or earlier. This is a full-time, Washington, DC-based position. The position will start virtually if the stay-at-home orders are extended for District of Columbia, Virginia, and Maryland.

Job Description: The economist would perform policy-focused economic analysis and write issue briefs, research papers, and other publications relevant to CEPR’s research program on labor and social policy. The successful candidate will have strong empirical skills, experience using large data sets such as the CPS or ACS, the ability to conduct original quantitative research and will have experience in one or more of the following areas: economic disparities, labor standards and workplace protections, employment and unemployment, domestic outsourcing, health and social programs, and/or financialization. The responsibilities will vary based on the applicant’s interests and experience, as well as the particular issues that CEPR is working on at the time.

Qualifications: The ideal candidate will possess most or all of the following qualifications. However, CEPR will consider strong candidates whose experience and capabilities are roughly equivalent.

  • Advanced degree in economics, sociology, public policy, industrial relations, or related field, at the Ph.D. level or an equivalent combination of experience and a master’s degree.
  • Ability to initiate and conduct research projects independently and also collaborate with others as part of a research team.
  • Demonstrated research experience using quantitative methods.
  • Strong writing and analytical skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of federal labor market data from the Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with advocacy groups, policymakers, and the media.
  • Compatibility with CEPR’s perspective and commitment to social and economic justice.

Compensation: CEPR offers a competitive salary and an excellent benefits package. Minimum starting salary for the position is $70,246, and salary will be commensurate with skills, education and experience. CEPR offers generous paid time off, medical, dental, disability, and life insurance, and retirement contributions. This position will be represented by the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union (NPEU).
