Health and Safety Representative

Based in Oakland, CA

National Nurses United (NNU), the nation’s largest union and professional association for nurses, seeks a Health and Safety Representative for a position based in the San Francisco Bay area. NNU leads the bedside nurses’ movement to transform the market-driven healthcare industry in the United States into a healthcare system driven by patient needs.

NNU’s Health and Safety Division monitors work-related health and safety issues and trends affecting direct care, bedside registered nurses (RNs) and other healthcare workers; conducts research, literature reviews, synthesis and analysis on issues within its area of concern; collaborates with the legal, government relations, communications and collective bargaining departments; serves as a resource on work-related health and safety issues for labor representatives and organizing staff; provides oral and written testimony and submits public comments on behalf of the organization; develops materials and other resources on pertinent work-related health and safety issues and applicable regulatory standards; and provides continuing education programs.

The Health and Safety Representative will serve as a general resource on work-related health and safety issues, appropriate and effective employer prevention measures, and occupational and environmental health advocacy issues for the organization.

The Health and Safety Representative will plan, organize, coordinate and present education and training programs on work-related health and safety issues, prevention, applicable standards and enforcement at a grassroots and leadership level.

Qualifications
We seek a candidate with the following qualities:

  • Experience designing and leading workshops, trainings, or other adult education programs.
  • Knowledge of work-related health and safety issues with experience in healthcare preferred.
  • Ability to interpret and apply OSHA standards relevant to healthcare and to recommend corrective measures when needed.
  • Ability and willingness to travel.
  • A valid driver’s license.
  • Strong commitment to social and economic justice. Organizing experience a plus.
  • Strong writing skills required.
  • An advanced degree or certification in industrial hygiene, public health, or a related field preferred.
