The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and the Alaska Public Employees Association (APEA) seek a full-time Organizer to work with elected local leadership, members, partners and staff to facilitate membership activism, build internal organization, and identify and develop worksite leaders.

Position Description: This is a full-time project organizer position. The position offers a comprehensive benefits package. The position will be based in Anchorage and will require some travel throughout Alaska and possible travel out of state for trainings and development. Long and irregular work hours, including evenings and weekends will be required.

Primary duties will include:

  1. Having one-on-one and group organizing conversations with potential, new and current members of the local, mapping the workplace, turning out members to meetings and events, and executing an organizing plan.
  2. Identifying, recruiting, and training potential leaders;
  3. Keeping detailed notes and managing confidential data;
  4. Supporting the local campaign planning process; and
  5. Motivating members and setting an example in organizing and meeting commitments.
  6. Other duties as assigned related to building power in the workplace and state.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Union organizing experience preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Strong interest in and commitment to unions, the labor movement, and social justice
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication, listening, motivational skills, and attention to detail
  • Computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office, Word, Excel and databases
