The Communications Coordinator, under the direction of the Public Policy Director, is responsible for developing and implementing the Union’s communications campaign plans to broaden public awareness of HPAE’s campaign priorities across key stakeholder audiences, including for internal organizing, political and legislative action, bargaining, and other activities including, but not limited to the following:

  • Create a public campaign strategy that will allow HPAE leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high level external audiences, including the media, public officials and key influencers.
  • Write and develop background pieces, fact sheets, press kit materials, leaflets, brochures, and other materials as needed for various campaigns.
  • Develop content and content planning for union websites, social media, and mobile communication platforms.
  • Edit and administer existing social media accounts, share digital content, drive online engagement, and identify new ways and platforms to communicate with both members and the public.
  • Coordinate press relations including pitching stories, writing and distributing press releases, taking reporters’ calls, media event logistics, interviews, and maintaining media database.
  • Coordinate with statewide and local leaders in writing and placing op-eds and letters-to-the-editor in various healthcare and statewide media publications.
  • Assist in the production and editing of videos for online platforms. Prepare and train members to speak publicly to promote the union’s message.
  • In conjunction/coordination with HPAE Staff and Leaders, develop and implement an internal strategic communications plan – including, but not limited to, statewide and local news alerts, engaging members on social media and conduct communications trainings.
  • Work with member leaders and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them.
  • Advise, and at times, assist local unions with content, managing, and administering website, e-mail, mobile, social media, and print communications.
  • Ensure the quality and consistency of all communications. Coordinate the design, content, and style of union communications in all aspects of production and distribution.
  • May coordinate project work with communication-related consultants to ensure effective, timely and accurate delivery of work in support of campaign initiatives.
  • Participate in Public Policy staff meetings and strategic development for annual planning.
  • Coordinate and facilitate Communication Team meetings.

Qualifications

  • Five (5) or more years of experience in a strategic communications role, developing and implementing strategy on a wide range of campaigns, including organizing, elections, political, and legislative, as well as experience working with community allies or related experience.
  • Preferable experience or relationships with unions or other similar advocacy organizations.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a timely manner and track a variety of projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to implement press strategy for contract or legislative campaign: including paid and earned media, press conferences and events.
  • Direct coordination experience of digital campaign execution.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to make presentations and conduct trainings.
  • Ability to write statements and work with leadership in presenting issues to the public.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate in politically sensitive situations, to exercise good judgement and think critically.
  • Knowledge of the New Jersey political and policy landscape a plus.
  • Experience using Office 365 programs, Adobe Creative Suite, Action Network, Hustle, and WordPress a plus.
  • Graphic design and video editing experience is a plus.
  • Fluency in a second language is a plus.

Excellent salary and benefits. Across-the-board increases and seniority increments are provided each year as provided by the staff union contract. There is an excellent benefit package, including health and pension benefits, a car allowance, and tuition reimbursement.
