The Minneapolis Federation of Teachers, Local 59 is a 100-year-old labor union of about 5,000 educators in the Minneapolis Public Schools. MFT 59 represents licensed teachers, related service professionals, education support professionals, adult educators. MFT 59 is affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers, National Education Association, Education Minnesota, and AFL-CIO. 

Purpose of Position
MFT is seeking an experienced organizer to carry out its community organizing program. Initially, the primary role will be to connect union membership with community organizations to build relationships and develop a Bargaining for the Common Good agenda.

Major Functions

  • Facilitate relationship-building between MFT membership and community organizations
  • Plan and lead successful community events
  • Interface with internal organizers to ensure open communication
  • Lead issue campaign organizing efforts
  • Identify and develop member and community leaders
  • Work to advance the strategic goals of the MFT
  • Ensure communication between MFT leadership, membership, and community

Required knowledge and skills

  • Understanding of labor unions and the role of organized labor in social movements
  • Familiarity with Minneapolis and its diverse communities 
  • Familiarity with Minneapolis Public Schools and public education issues
  • Strong oral and written communications skills
  • Strong personal organizational skills
  • Intercultural and intergenerational competency
  • Ability to reflect upon and process a range of interactions and group dynamics
  • Ability to represent and advocate for the values and interests of MFT

Minimum qualifications and requirement

  • High school diploma or GED
  • 3 years community organizing experience
  • Valid driver’s license and proof of insurance

Preferred qualifications

  • Union experience – either as a member or staff
  • Lifetime resident of Minneapolis
  • Graduate of Minneapolis Public Schools
  • Self-starter
  • Group facilitation background
  • Successful experience working in a coalition on an issue campaign
  • Experience with Bargaining for the Common Good campaigns in contract negotiations
