Communications Organizer

Based in Portland, OR

Oregon Federation of Nurses and Healthcare Professionals (OFNHP) Local 5017 represents 5,500 nurses and healthcare professionals in Oregon and Washington, most of them employees of Kaiser Permanente, with a growing number from the PeaceHealth system. OFNHP is an affiliate of the Nurses and Health Professionals division of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT).

POSITION SUMMARY
OFNHP Communications Organizer works with a team and member leaders to advance the strategic goals of a member-driven labor union. The Communications Organizer is responsible for supporting implementation of the overall strategic direction established by the Executive Council and elected President.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Development and implementation of communication plans for the union including organization, political action, bargaining, and other activities
  • Work cooperatively and accountably with a team of Organizers and member leaders to develop and execute a common program
  • Strategy and messaging, media promotion, marketing, newsletters, websites, social media, promotional media communications, assists with branding, press-releases and press-conferences
  • Supports stewards and worksite leaders
  • Engages members in union activities
  • Collaborative role with Organizers who build worksite structures for communication, mobilization, and leadership development
  • Communications and campaign messaging around workplace issues such as staffing and workload
  • Supports steward programs and other tools to enforce union contracts and improve working conditions
  • Develops communications with a team to support contract campaigns to build participation in all forms of bargaining
  • Works effectively in a labor-management partnership environment
  • Encourages participation in political and community coalition-building activities and the COPE contribution program
  • Communications strategies dissemination such as work plans, calendars, files, reports, lists and other records as directed

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to work with staff and member leaders to identify issues, strategize communications, and to build power to secure desired changes in the workplace
  • Commitment to social justice and the organizing model of unionism
  • Union or community organizing experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong planning and time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Demonstrated self-starter
  • Willingness and ability to work long and irregular hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Willingness and ability to travel for work assignments
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable car

PREFERRED

  • Experience in internal and external organizing and communications organizing in healthcare settings
  • Experience and knowledge of computer programs (including word processing, spreadsheet and database software)
  • Experience negotiating collective bargaining agreements in the private sector
