Virginia State Director (Temporary)
Grade: MGT C

Based out of Washington, DC
(this is a remote position)

This is a temporary position that will end after the November 2020 elections.

Annual Salary: $94,601/YR

Location: This is a Remote Position

Purpose:
The Virginia State Director will work with SEIU’s Area Political Director and local unions, to develop and lead an integrated work plan that drives a Unions for All agenda in support of SEIU’s overall vision. Primary Responsibilities: (Any one position may not include all of the specific duties and responsibilities listed. Examples provide a general summary of the work required and should not be treated as a total and complete list of expected duties to be performed by employees in the classification)

  • Overseeing achievement of goals including Committee of Political Action (COPE) fundraising, voter and member registration, volunteer recruitment, retention and development, Member Political Organizer (MPO) recruitment, development and retention, and voter persuasion and turnout efforts
  • Coordinate statewide canvass and voter contact apparatus, including but not limited to managing relationships and contracts with vendors
  • Represent SEIU locals and International Union at state political and civic engagement tables and with partners
  • Coordinating, managing, and reporting on staff and member voter contact programs
  • Implement member program with partners and candidates as needed, including volunteerism, member lobbying actions, and endorsements
  • Performing daily/nightly and weekly quantitative and qualitative reporting of electoral field program, communications, and partner grant work

Direction and Decision Making:
This position reports to the Area Political Director or his/her/their designee, and is required to coordinate with multiple stakeholders. The incumbent is expected to be a self-starter who can work independently but with a high level of accountability.

Education, Skills & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university preferred, and at least one (1) year of related work experience, or, a high school diploma or equivalency and two (2) years of experience in campaign work. Alternatively, a combination of education and experience that would provide for the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Understands and has familiarity with union programs and activities including organizing, politics, bargaining, representation and coalition building at the international level.
  • Ability and desire to drive change within the organization.
  • Proven ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion
  • Can work well independently and as a member of a group
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Proven ability to make strategic and logically sound decisions in a fast paced campaign-like environment.
  • Proven organizational skills and punctuality.
  • Commitment to timely communication and information sharing.
  • Demonstrated skills in the use of computers to include Microsoft Office suite (e.g. Access and Excel), G-Suite, databases, spreadsheets, and internet research
  • Detail-oriented and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Able and willing to travel when necessary and on short notice
  • Commitment to promoting SEIU’s organizational goals

Physical Requirements:
Work is generally performed in an office setting. Long and extended hours and frequent travel required.
