GEO Part-Time Administrative Assistant/Database Manager

Summary: The Graduate Employees’ Organization (GEO) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks to hire a part-time (~20-25 hours a week) Administrative Assistant and Database Manager. This position is funded by membership dues.The Administrative Assistant/Database Manager’s core responsibilities are (1) Database management and maintenance, (2) Processing Membership, and (3) Office Staffing and (4) other membership organizing and coordinating duties as needed.

The target start date for this position is July 20, 2020.

The Graduate Employees’ Organization (GEO) represents approximately 2,800 Teaching and Graduate Assistants employed at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It is a member-led union with paid professional staff that works under the direction of elected, volunteer officers. The GEO is a democratic, activist, and social justice union, with a strong sense of solidarity and active community involvement.

In 2018, the GEO led a two week strike to win their contract. The GEO has also participated in various community and campus campaigns such as:

  • Increasing protections for nursing mothers, parents of various genders, access to health benefits for LGBTQ partners of employees, etc.
  • Raising the grad minimum wage in excess of inflation and protecting tuition waivers.
  • Advocating against racist imagery such as the “Chief” as the UIUC mascot.
  • Fighting for immigrant rights, including expelling federal deportation agents from the Champaign County Jail, and preventing them from being able to divide families here.
  • Stopping the expansion of a 20-million dollar jail that would have disproportionately affected African-American residents, and also fighting for a re-entry program.
  • Working with student organizations to add gender confirmation surgery to the student insurance plan.
  • Organizing in solidarity with other unions to fight against IL Governor Bruce Rauner, who, like Wisconsin’s Scott Walker, has demonstrated that he will undermine our rights as organized workers and attack our union.

Job Duties:

  • Maintain a database of GEO members and their information.
  • Train other GEO staff and stewards on data entry.
  • Ensure that the office is staffed for at least 20 hours per week during normal business hours. The Administrative Assistant shares responsibility for dealing with phone calls to the office as well as walk-in visits by members.
  • Encouraged to attend Coordinating Committee meetings and Stewards Council meetings. The Administrative Assistant may be asked to attend other meetings as needed.
  • Ensure that all office, meeting, and storage spaces are reasonably clean and organized. The Administrative Assistant should also ensure that the office is always well stocked with all necessary supplies and functioning equipment.
  • Supporting the work of GEO Committees as needed, in coordination with other GEO Staff
  • Facilitate and support a robust organizational communication infrastructure, which includes relaying messages, duties, tasks and activities across various committees clearly and efficiently, as well as coordinating and maintaining a clear sense of overall organization objectives and goals.

Qualifications:

  • Experience maintaining a database
  • Experience coordinating with volunteers
  • Experience with membership or constituent management
  • Excellent organization skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize them in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Ability to use word processing, spreadsheets, and databases

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with QuickBooks Pro
  • Experience working for a labor union
  • Experience working with communities of color, on social justice campaigns, as well as workers’ rights campaigns, and/or Get Out The Vote campaigns.

Salary and benefits:
$25.00/hr, health, dental, vision subsidy. Other benefits include retirement funds, financial support for student and/or medical debt, paid leave, as well as mileage at the standard IRS rate of 57.5 cents per mile and parking. The position is covered by the GEO Staff Union contract. Staff members negotiate their benefits as a union with the GEO.
