Field Organizer
United Campus Workers of Colorado
(CWA Local 7799
Based in Boulder, CO
Position Title: Field Organizer
Location: Boulder, Colorado
Start Date: April 27th, 2020
United Campus Workers of Colorado (CWA Local 7799) seeks a Field Organizer with a passion for social justice to help organize a wall-to-wall union in the University of Colorado (CU) system, which includes locations in Boulder, Colorado Springs, and Denver. University workers eligible to join this union include graduate students, staff, lecturers, instructors, and faculty.
Graduate workers at CU-Boulder began organizing an unaffiliated union, the Committee for Rights and Compensation (CRC), in 2017 and garnered over 400 dues-paying members in three years. As an unaffiliated union, the CRC helped to secure pay raises, a partial reduction in student fees, dental coverage, and paid family leave through direct action and organizing campaigns. As a result of these victories and with the intention of escalating its labor strategy, the union decided to affiliate with a national labor union, Communication Workers of America as a local chapter of United Campus Workers.
The full-time field organizer will be accountable to the local union Board of Directors and the democratic will of rank-and-file membership. In this position, the field organizer will be responsible for organizing workers throughout the CU system by developing recruitment and canvassing strategies, through coordinating and managing issue campaigns that improve material conditions for all rank-and-file members, and through maintaining continuity and institutional memory of the local union.
