Lead Organizer

based in Portland, OR

Position : Lead Organizer for the Portland Community College Federation of Faculty and Academic Professionals (PCCFFAP) union, American Federation of Teachers Local 2277, Portland, OR. This is a 40 hours per week position, with health insurance, holidays, vacation & sick leave, and retirement benefits. Pay will be based on experience, in a range of $49,000 to $61,000.

We are seeking a Lead Organizer to work with an existing union representing 1700 faculty (both PT and FT) and Academic Professionals at Oregon’s largest college.

The Lead Organizer is responsible for all aspects of internal organizing within our large, multi-campus local. This includes providing effective leadership to educators and member organizers, identifying and developing leadership, developing issues-based organizing plans for assigned areas, and motivating the organizing committee and activists, and staff as assigned.

A Lead Organizer is a highly skilled organizer with organizing experience as demonstrated by their knowledge, skills and abilities from past organizing campaigns. Our preferred applicant will possess the following experience and skill set:

  • Demonstrated organizing ability including, but not limited to, the ability to lead and motivate organizing work (including with member organizers and temporary or PT organizing staff)
  • Ability to develop and implement a strategic plan for organizing and lead campaigns on a range of issues in coordination with member organizers and executive council
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse population
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, effectively lead others and achieve goals
  • A thorough understanding of higher education (especially community college) policy and issues
  • Knowledge of labor laws
  • Strong abilities to handle multiple deadlines simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and social skills
  • Strong data management skills
  • Commitment to the labor movement and social, economic and educational justice

Additional Qualifications for Applicants:

  • Willingness to work nights, weekends and travel as required
  • Be self-motivated, responsible, organized, professional and detail-oriented
  • Computer literacy including basic skills in Google Drive, AFT database systems, and social media
  • A commitment to social justice and union building
  • Valid driver’s license and insured car

Summary Description of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Mentoring member leaders in all aspects of organizing
  • Overseeing and engaging in the day-to-day organizing in the local
  • Assessing the strengths and weaknesses of organizing staff
  • Lead debriefing and coaching of organizing staff
  • Helping motivate and provide feedback to organizing staff and member leaders
  • Ability to write and conduct trainings for member leaders and organizing staff
  • Developing message and communications
  • Data management and data entry of membership database
  • Monthly reporting to Organizing Committee and Executive Council on completed organizing work and future plans
  • Other duties as assigned by local president and/or organizing committee

Though the Lead Organizer does direct the daily activities and development of the organizing staff, the position of Lead Organizer is not a supervisory position, and reports to their immediate supervisor, the local president. PCCFFAP staff have union representation and a shared contract.

Salary and Benefits: Compensation is based on experience. Benefits include health
insurance, vacation and sick leave, retirement and professional development/training, as well as auto, travel and expense reimbursements.
