Position Overview:
The International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation Workers (SMART) is seeking to fill the position of Government Relations Representative. This position is based in SMART Headquarters in Washington, DC.

SMART is a broad-based labor union representing nearly 203,000 sheet metal workers, service technicians, bus operators, engineers, conductors, sign workers, welders, production employees, and more across the United States and Canada. SMART engages in advocacy efforts on federal legislation and executive branch rulemakings that directly impact the union’s membership. Candidates are expected to be proactive self-starters that are highly organized, detail-oriented, strong verbal communicators, excellent writers, and able to manage multiple competing tasks in order to advance the union’s broad policy agenda on Capitol Hill.

General Duties/Responsibilities:
The Government Relations Representative will work with the Director of Governmental Affairs in the SMART governmental and legislative department to develop and implement legislative and political strategies to create jobs and promote the safety and well-being of our members.

This position requires exceptional writing skills with a deep understanding of Capitol Hill and the legislative process. Specifically, the Government Relations Representative will be responsible for developing and implementing a proactive lobbying strategy, building relationships with Congressional offices, communicating to members of Congress and their staff the legislative and policy priorities of SMART, tracking political developments, and attending political fundraising events.

Other key responsibilities include analyzing legislation and drafting written materials to support the work of the department, which includes membership communications, legislation, talking points, fact sheets, press releases, congressional testimony, and regulatory comments. The Government Relations Representative also may perform other duties as assigned.

Education Skills:
Ideal candidates will have at least 3-5 years’ experience in lobbying to advance the policy agenda of a labor organization, trade association or non-profit on Capitol Hill. Alternatively, candidates with 3-5 years’ experience working in a Congressional office managing an issue portfolio with a proven record of advancing a member or committee’s legislative agenda will be considered.

Related Bachelor’s degree or a minimum of 5-8 years of relevant lobbying, trade association or labor union governmental affairs support in a parallel role.

Knowledge of Building Trades policy issues, a passion for the labor movement, and existing relationships with key House and Senate Democratic and Republican policy and political contacts are a plus.

Finally, a proven track record of successfully passing legislative policy proposals is a plus.

  • Use of computer keyboard;
  • Sitting/ standing for long periods and ability to travel by various means, e.g. train, plane, automobile.
