  • Full-time Field Coordinator to support an SEIU Local based in Denver, Colorado.

Department: External Healthcare Organizing
Position is: Full-Time    
Excluded from Bargaining Unit: Yes

Immediate Supervisor: Department Director

KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervise the daily work of organizers; coordinate the orderly operation of all field organizing projects; participate in administrative and strategic planning for the Union and to coordinate planning activities with staff organizers; implement policy decisions of the Union as they impact the Union’s organizing program and manage personnel issues.

Supervise and oversee all healthcare organizing projects, including organizing drives, union elections, the political program of the union, leader recruitment, training and development, leadership structures and worker-empowerment on a statewide level.

Coordinate all statewide organizing campaigns, politics, and worker empowerment.

Train and mentor organizers in all aspects of Union organizing work.

Coordinate meetings of organizers (team and one-on-one) that include planning, reporting, evaluating and implementing accountability structures that relate to the Union’s overall strategic plan.

Participate in union-wide organizing drives, political campaigns and other field activities as assigned, which may include worksite visits, phone banking, house visits, door-to-door canvassing and literature drops.

Includes other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

General Requirements:

  • Commitment to social justice
  • 3-5 years’ experience with above job responsibilities in other paid, professional positions or equivalent experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Intermediate experience and knowledge of computer programs is needed (such as Word, Publisher, and Excel)
  • Proficiency in using organizing VAN
  • Driver’s license and reliable car is a must

The Field Coordinator is a Senior Staff-level role responsible for implementing strategic plans and staff development. In order to be successful, a candidate must be able to demonstrate experience and proficiency in the following areas:

Leadership – The Field Coordinator is responsible for providing leadership to a team of organizers.

  • Motivating organizers around our union’s goals
  • Holding staff accountable and assists them in overcoming obstacles
  • Appropriately prioritizing organizers work
  • Delivering clear consistent direction to team
  • Communicating clearly on how the work of the team connects with our union’s goals
  • Contributing to overall development of internal program through strategic planning meetings with Director, and other Directors as needed
  • Making sound independent decisions on campaigns, e.g. how to recruit leaders, how to best fight the boss, messaging etc.
  • Planning and leading productive, participatory team meetings
  • Establishing weekly goals in accordance with overall union’s priorities and working to help organizers achieve them
  • Appropriately prioritizing their own work and asking for help when needed
  • Providing leadership for statewide projects, as appropriate

Staff Development – The Field coordinator is responsible for developing a team of organizers with strong organizing skills.

  • Building a real team, in which members feel valued, supported, and interdependent.
  • Mentoring staff – Identifying organizers strengths and weaknesses and working with them to develop their skills.
  • Effectively training staff how to identify, recruit & develop leaders, agitate workers/mobilize activists, effectively plan, lead and prepare worker leaders to hold effective meetings, negotiate & enforce collective bargaining agreements
  • Developing and implementing effective contract campaigns and issue campaigns, helping organizers to follow the plan
  • Conducting effective skills assessments, developing and implementing effective staff development plans
  • Conducting effective one on one meetings
  • Spending time in the field, mentoring staff

Working Conditions/Environment:
Office and field work involving travel to areas represented throughout the state and in a variety of environmental situations. The workweek is Monday through Friday plus weekend work when specifically assigned. The workday may begin before and extend beyond normal office hours depending on the demands of the assignment.

Salary and Benefits:

  • Salary commensurate with experience, in the range of $64,000 – $75,000 annually.
