Full-Time Organizer

Based in Houston, TX

About the IUPAT
The International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) represents a growing force of men and women in the United States and Canada who work in the Finishing Trades – Industrial & Commercial Painting, Drywall Finishing, Glazing & Glass Work, Sign & Display, and Floor Covering Installation, and many more successful careers in the construction industry and public sector. The IUPAT is committed to representing, building power with and fighting alongside with all workers in our industry; union and non-union alike.

Organizer Responsibilities

  • Build one-on-one relationships with workers through outreach efforts that include jobsite visits, house visits, etc.
  • Inspire workers to take action.
  • Assist in developing strategy with varying tactics to improve industry standards.
  • Work with existing and potential union members in developing worker organizing committees.
  • Develop leaders and guide workers through active campaigns.
  • Assist in recruiting and developing workforce to meet labor demands.
  • Assist in member-driven bargaining campaigns and community-labor solidarity efforts to advance a social justice agenda in Houston, TX.
  • Assist in organizing and coordinating large actions such as pickets, rallies, marches, and strikes.
  • Assist leaders in mobilizing for union actions, community actions and campaigns through activities such as phone-banking, leafleting, online outreach, site visits, home visits, etc.
  • Assist with outreach to engage student organizations, community groups, and other allies
  • Perform administrative tasks necessary for organizing (such as maintaining databases, producing materials and correspondence).
  • This position is jointly supervised by the IUPAT and DC 88.
  • Any other duties/tasks as assigned.

Candidate characteristics

  • A demonstrated commitment to union democracy, bottom-up, member-driven organizing, social justice, anti-oppression, and social movement unionism
  • Strong preference for individuals with previous organizing experience in labor, community, student, and/or social movement organizations or campaigns
  • Must be bilingual and literate in English and Spanish languages
  • Strong preference for individuals who are familiar with the political landscape of Houston and Texas
  • Strong coalition-building and facilitation skills across a diverse set of organizations and constituents
  • Experience organizing workplace and community actions with broad participation
  • Experience building strong internal union organizing through base building and membership leadership development
  • Experience with organizing construction workers, Latino, immigrant workers, and/or workers of color.
  • An ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously and meet established deadlines
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Willingness to work some weeknights and weekends
  • Willingness to respond promptly to emails, phone calls, and other forms of communication
