American Federation of Teachers Locals 1729, 1903, & 2412

Based in Kalamazoo, MI

This position is for a full-time Staff Organizer working with three AFT Locals in Kalamazoo, Michigan, representing graduate teaching assistants and adjunct instructors at Western Michigan University and Kalamazoo Valley Community College.

This position is represented by CWA Local 34022, the Newspaper Guild of Detroit.

The position’s duties include, but are not limited to, working with members, leadership, and other staff members to accomplish the goals of the unions as described below. Duties fall under three categories: union organizing, labor relations, and office management.

In order to meet these duties, the employee must be willing and able to work and travel irregular hours (weekend and evenings may be required). Duties and responsibilities will vary based on the time of year and the needs of each Local, but may include any of the following:

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Create and implement comprehensive organizing and member contact plans
  • Work with Local leaders to foster democracy within the Local unions
  • Assist Local leaders in coordinating and implementing events, goals, and activities
  • Represent Local unions in relations with university/college Administration
  • Maintain communication and relations with relevant personnel of other labor organizations and the media
  • Maintain union database/database permissions, records and organizing tools
  • Help Local officers maintain accurate financial records and bookkeeping
  • Produce regular reports on organizing activities for Local leadership
  • Maintain an accurate list of members, by academic department, for organizing purposes

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a labor or community organizing
  • Familiarity with institutions of higher education and public sector unions
  • Experience working with graduate employees and adjunct instructors
  • Experience with and/or training in collective bargaining and grievances
  • Experience with database and organizing software
  • Computer skills including Microsoft Office, GSuite, and familiarity with graphic design software
  • Strong sense of self-direction and motivation
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Problem solving and teamwork skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to work irregular hours
  • Willingness to work with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds
  • Reliable transportation and a valid driver’s license are required

Compensation
The position pays an annual salary of $42,500 a year, with medical insurance and other benefits provided.
