Internal Organizing Campaign Coordinator

WHO WE ARE:

Our members provide public services in diverse fields, including health care, social services, special districts, private non-profits, libraries, courts, parks and recreation, public works and mental health. They care for the sick, protect the quality of the drinking water, keep records in the courts, administer benefits for poor people, maintain the libraries, help run the jails, protect our communities’ most vulnerable members, maintain the streets, work with parolees, groom and maintain the beaches, and provide many other services to keep counties and cities running.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Internal Organizing Coordinator primary responsibility is to directly implement her/his component of the local’s strategic campaign plan, guided by the Regional/Division Director or other manager assigned. She/he provides day-to-day supervision to staff, monitors staff development of assigned staff, trains, mentors, coaches staff, and has the authority to recommend and implement discipline. She/he makes recommendations on assignments based on staff development needs. She/he reports directly to the Regional/ Division Director or other manager assigned. This is not a 9 to 5 job – long and varied hours, with early morning, evening, weekend work and travel, including overnight stays. This is an exempt position.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  • Assists in developing / implementing / evaluating all aspects of campaign plans and work plans for assigned staff;
  • Assists with developing and implementing strategic campaigns;
  • Assists with developing staff development plans including performance improvement plans;
  • Assist with developing staff on representation and steward development;
  • Supervises and mentors assigned staff;
  • Makes recommendations and follow through on staff disciplinary issues;
  • Identifies and assists with implementing legal, community and political strategies;
  • Debriefs assigned staff and members;
  • May assist in reviewing weekly work plans for assigned staff including but not limited to weekly 1-on-1’s,
  • Ensure the submission of timely reports including but not limited to work plans, activity reports, mileage, reimbursements, time sheets, etc.;
  • Model and provide feedback to team members;
  • May serve as the lead staff negotiator in bargaining and/or oversee bargaining contract campaigns;
  • May perform other duties and/or special projects as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:                                               

  • Commitment to building long-term power for working people.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to write reports, make presentations, facilitate meetings, and conduct training.
  • Excellent analytical and program planning skills.
  • Ability to develop and maintain good working relations with diverse membership and staff.
  • Ability to inspire and motivate others.
  • Ability to take initiative, to work with a team, and to handle a fast-paced setting, multiple projects and tight deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Word and PowerPoint, as well as working knowledge of spreadsheets and database software.
  • Strong knowledge and experience in union internal organizing in the public sector.
  • Knowledge of organizing campaign strategies and their application.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience developing and leading union organizing campaigns preferred.
  • Experience in the legal, political, economic and industry forces that impact organizing campaigns.
  • Experience in developing and implementing organizing campaigns preferred.
  • Experience in representation and steward development preferred.
  • Knowledge of labor laws relating to the public and private sector and non-profit industries.
  • Knowledge and experience in the supervision of workers.
  • Experience in organizing, development and mobilization of workers.
  • Experience in lobbying elected and appointed officials.
  • Experience working with community organizations.
  • Ability to demonstrate self-motivation, initiative, critical thinking skills, responsibility and productivity.
  • Proven ability to develop staff and members
  • Familiarity of databases and word processing programs

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours and participate in all union wide activities.
  • Willingness to travel and work in different locations for determined periods of time.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in managing staff and members on organizing campaigns preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license, working automobile and valid auto insurance with minimum level of coverage as required by Local 721.
  • Commitment to social justice and building power for workers.
