ICLS seeks a professional Program Manager to focus on coordinating and institutionalizing the development of new blended in-person and on-line labor education and academic labor studies program in conjunction with Morehouse faculty, visiting scholars, and union colleagues. This manager will also oversee public discourse projects and student recruitment and internships. We seek a self-starter who is a people-person ready to organize with energy and enthusiasm and also comfortable with stepping into a leadership role that requires close attention to mastery of existing institutional fiduciary details in an academic setting. Fundamentally, we want someone who loves making things happen, directly and by working with others. Cultural competency to navigate this complex space is important, as are good listening skills!

WHO WE ARE
International Comparative Labor Studies

The International Comparative Labor Studies (ICLS) is a faculty-led program at Morehouse College launched in 2017 to establish a labor studies program for students and worker education curriculum with leadership development and pathways into political economic justice careers. Through establishing strong relationships with academic, policy, and union leadership, both locally and globally, and organizing to enhance the research and community education capacity in the African American community, the Morehouse College International Comparative Labor Studies program has the capacity to provide relevant information and cogent analysis to our communities’ workers, policymakers, and civil society. ICLS is founded upon a Pan-African teaching approach that promotes a full understanding of the African heritage of work life, including intellectual and social contributions, for particular service to African American human development.

The Advancing Black Strategists Initiative
Morehouse College ICLS is partnering with Jobs with Justice Education Fund and the Black Worker Initiative of the Institute for Policy Studies, to develop the Advancing Black Strategists Initiative (ABSI). ABSI will further our collective work by creating skilled and knowledgeable strategists by providing pathways for cohorts of Black economic-justice and labor-focused organizers and scholar activists who are committed to leading, developing, and advancing policies and campaigns that support the collective power-building of working people, particularly in the South. ICLS/ABSI sponsors and promotes development of scholarly theory and analysis, and public discourse engagement of faculty, students, unions and community related to collective power-building of working people

WHAT YOU WILL DO
The program manager will manage components of the ICLS program goals and objectives, including all ABSI components. They will provide leadership in coordinating the development of the ABSI educational offerings, including curriculum and certificate programs, in conjunction with the director and faculty, who will be designing and teaching courses, and carrying out research. You will interface with the College administration and build ICLS relationships with unions and community. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Interacting with ICLS / ABSI leadership and staff, as well as media, union, and government officials to plan and coordinate activities
  • Managing administrative activities related to fiscal management, procurement, and other administrative and support services
  • Management of funding proposals from preparation through the award process
  • Oversight of student recruitment, internships and a job fair
  • Oversight of recruitment and on-boarding process for an honorary visiting professor to assist with curriculum development and advance ICLS and ABSI schools of thought
  • Organizing public discourse engagement of faculty and students with unions and community related to collective power-building of working people
  • Assisting with research, writing, and publishing ICLS / ABSI research and advocacy papers and other written materials
  • Planning and coordinating ABSI events and other programmatic activities with the ICLS project managers, including: Managing event registration; Preparation of event materials; On-site event management; and activities related to website maintenance and social media accounts; Other duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS INCLUDE:
Both academic knowledge and professional communication skills, and practical experience in union organizing and/or strategic decision-making with communities, are needed.

Education and Experience

  • College degree, or a combination of education and experience deemed equivalent
  • Five years minimum of experience in a responsible program management or similar position with demonstrated successful completion of two or more projects

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Self-starter and highly motivated
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the proven ability to maintain priorities, and foresee possible contingencies and act on them without direct supervision.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with planning software, such as Asana, Mondays, or Kanban Tool, etc.
  • Excellent writing skills for media, websites, reports, proposal writing and letters
  • Able to pay attention to details and meet deadlines.
  • Requires initiative and the ability to
  • Able to interact well with diverse groups, make public presentations and manage multiple tasks.
  • Requires excellent computer skills with an in-depth knowledge of Microsoft programs and data collection software.
  • Able to manage the bookkeeping of projects.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally

Other preferred qualities:

  • Labor center or labor academic program experience
  • Knowledge of Africana heritage of work life, and intellectual and social contributions
  • Public policy experience
  • Knowledge of the global labor movement
  • This is a new position in a rapidly developing program, hence willingness to pitch-in and interest in continual learning are both needed.

This position is classified full-time exempt. Office hours are 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, Mondays through Fridays, with some evening and weekend work required. Position has the ability to flex hours to accommodate these requirements.

Compensation:
A competitive full benefits package is offered including employer subsidized health insurance, paid time off (PTO), disability, and a retirement savings plan with employer matching. Salary range is $70,000 – $90,000.
