Locations: Fairfax, Norfolk, and Hampton, VA

Job Purpose
Norfolk County Federation of Teachers and Fairfax County Federation of Teachers, locals of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), AFL-CIO are seeking Union Organizers. Organizers are responsible for a variety of aspects of a campaign including building relationships with workers, developing issues-based organizing plans for assigned areas, and for recruiting and sustaining motivation of organizing committee members and activists.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Organize and mobilize workers
  • Attend weekly meetings with supervisors to discuss progress and plan activities
  • Identifying and developing new workplace leaders to participate in organizing efforts
  • Communicating with members and potential members outside the workplace through site visits, home visits and phone calls (varying hours)
  • Coordinating with members and potential members to gather information that is useful in identifying opportunities for membership growth and mobilization
  • Coordinating with and involving community allies in organizing campaigns
  • Enter assessments and other data collected in a database on a weekly basis
  • Occasionally, be assigned to other locations as required
  • Take direction on daily and weekly activities to grow AFT membership and accomplish the overarching union vision
  • Conducting external and internal organizing
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Ability to work long and irregular hours (not a 9-5 job)
  • Ability to receive and implement feedback
  • Ability to make and follow through on a work plan
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong planning, time-management and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to comprehend educational policy and law
  • Ability to creatively apply strategies to short and long-term campaigns for organizing and member mobilization

Required licenses or certifications:

  • Working vehicle/car
  • Valid driving license

Preferred candidates will have:

  • Experience in labor/union, community, student, civil rights, or environmental activism or organizing is highly preferred, training will be provided for the right individual
  • Prior experience in comprehensive campaigns
  • Willingness to work with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds
  • Experience as an educator

Working conditions
The Union Organizer will be working out of a local office, but may attend meetings and events outside the office regularly. Special working conditions may cover a range of circumstances from regular evening and weekend work, attending conferences and school board meetings, and so forth.

Salary and benefits
Health benefits, 401k and vacation are included. Salary is between $50 – 55k.
