The Alliance of Health Care Unions seeks an experienced individual to fill the position of Alliance Director based in Seattle, WA.

The primary responsibility is to direct partnership activities in the Washington region, and National Functions/Shared Services of Kaiser Permanente, as well as national program work, and will require travel (once COVID-related restrictions are lifted.)

The Alliance of Health Care Unions (Alliance) is a labor federation made up of 22 local unions from nine International Unions representing 50,000 workers at Kaiser Permanente in California, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Georgia, and Maryland/Virginia/District of Columbia. The Alliance has a Labor Management Partnership Agreement with Kaiser Permanente (KP). This partnership has been recognized as the most successful, longest standing labor management partnership in the United States. Traditional union-management labor relationships and tactics have been replaced with the principles of mutual respect, the use of interest-based problem solving to address disputes, and multi-union solidarity.

The Alliance will be negotiating a new national collective bargaining agreement in 2021. We are committed to continuing and improving our partnership with Kaiser Permanente to give union leadership the opportunity to engage in national, regional and local decisions of concern and interest to our members, to give workers a voice at work, improve patient care and service, and make KP the best place to work. Applicants must be comfortable advocating for members within the framework of a “non-traditional, non- adversarial” union/management environment.

The individual that fills this position will be a self-directed strategic leader who provides counsel, guidance and support to regional and local union leaders and members within designated regions and/or designated programs. They will work to advance the strategy and goals of the Alliance at a national, regional and local level. In collaboration with Union and Management program leads, they will develop, oversee and implement the administration of national initiatives; develop programs, structures, and strategies to support union participation; and work with Program and /or Regional Union Leads, KP partners, regional and executive corporate management to advance shared interests on various programs/initiatives. They will apply a broad range of representational and negotiating experience/expertise in a union environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advance the goals and principles of the Labor Management Partnership at the national, regional and local levels.
  • Drive implementation and enforcement of the National Agreement, Employment and Income Security Agreement, etc. and coordinate consistent implementation across Kaiser Permanente regions.
  • Develop strong working relationships with managers at all levels of the organization to lead and advance multiple Labor Management Partnership programs.
  • Track key program deliverables and communicate important activities throughout the region or program.
  • Problem solve using the “interest-based” process.
  • Organize and coordinate the participation of local unions in partnership activities.
  • Lead, direct and oversee the work of union members on release-time and other LMP staff members.
  • Coach, mentor and develop frontline members in the performance of partnership activities.
  • Advocate for full participation of union members in partnership activities and give guidance to union members advancing the partnership.
  • Assist with the planning, monitoring and evaluation of partnership activities.
  • Represent the Alliance of Health Care Unions in joint labor management forums.

Qualifications

  • Experience working in a multi-union environment with a broad knowledge of all levels of the union community.
  • Leadership experience working in a senior Union and executive management environment.
  • Extensive program management experience, preferably in a health care environment.
  • Strong facilitation skills
  • Ability to be professional and assertive
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Skill in communication, collaboration, teamwork, and partnership

Location: This position is based in Seattle, Washington, and will have responsibilities in the Seattle area and nationally. The Alliance is headquartered in Southern California, and many of our meetings will take place in California (once COVID travel restrictions are lifted). The Alliance currently includes affiliates in California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Maryland/DC/ Virginia area, Oregon, and Washington.

Start date for the position is January 1, 2021.

Salary: Based on experience. Comprehensive benefit package including defined benefit pension, health insurance, dental, paid vacation.
