Racine Educators United (REA-REAA) is seeking a full-time Union Representative / Field Organizer to work with our members in the greater Racine region. The successful candidate for this position will have union or other progressive organization experience.  They will be goal oriented, values-driven, self-motivated and resourceful.

The Racine Educators United is a Union of educators in the Racine Unified School District that is member-led and dedicated to economic and social justice for our students, our community, and our members.

This position is responsible for internally organizing and training members, local union leadership development, internal organizing, grievance handling, and negotiating formally and informally.

POSITION SUMMARY: This position will work with the leadership and members of our union at each school and building site. The job requires the ability to collaborate efforts with elected leaders and released members in internal organizational efforts, political/electoral activities, contract/handbook negotiations and contract/handbook administration. Building an effective organizational structure for the Union at every school and in both bargaining units is the main focus of the position.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Interacts and communicates appropriately with governance, staff members, and the general public.
  • Assists in the planning, organizing and implementing of membership programs to increase membership in the Association.
  • Initiates, processes and assists members in securing due process through representation in personnel cases, grievances, arbitrations and dismissal proceedings. Processes and tracks requests for legal assistance to WEAC and retained firms as per Association procedures.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of the structure, operation, and function of the REUC, WEAC, and NEA.
  • Works with elected member leadership to develop the internal procedures and policies of the Association, develops mid-term and long-term planning documents, and writes grants and other applications for funding.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to motivate and lead workers in struggle
  • Effective communication skills – listening, oral and written
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Capacity to establish and cultivate relationships with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Demonstrated ability to organize workers and to represent workers with a focus on building the Union’s power around shared issues
  • Knowledge of labor law
  • Formal and informal negotiating skills
  • Proficiency in computer applications including email, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Google applications and tools and use of the Internet
  • Willingness to work long hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Experience with community coalition and community organizing
  • Must have reliable transportation to travel to worksites and meetings on short notice; cell phone with email capability.
